Mary Etta Crowl Chaffin

Mary  Etta Crowl Chaffin, 66, of Pax, died June 12, 2010, at home of her daughter, Belinda Cumberland, in Manassas, Va.

Born Sept. 23, 1943, at United, she was the daughter of the late Willard  and Kathryn Crowder Crowl. Her husband, Elmo Edwin Chaffin Jr.; daughter, Jennifer Ann Chaffin; and a brother, Willard J. Crowl, also preceded her in death.

Mary was Canteen Operations Clerk for VA Medical Center in Beckley. She was a former member of the White Oak Chapter National Railroad Historical Society in Oak Hill and the Collis P. Huntington N.R.H.S. in Huntington.

Surviving: daughters, Belinda Chaffin Cumberland and husband Kevin of Manassas, Va., and Cassie Chaffin Coulter and husband Kevin of Beckley; brothers, Charles Crowl of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., and Gary Crowl of Olympia, Wash.; sister, Teresa Evans of Cross Lanes; grandchildren, Jamie, Jessica and Jacqueline Cumberland and Jordan, Cody, Reedy, Makenzi and Morgan Coulter; and great-grandchildren, Noah, Evey and Kevin.

Services will be 11 a.m. on Friday, June 18, at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill, with Minister Keith Coulter Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens in Madison.

Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home on Thursday, June 17, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Bacil O. Chapman

Bacil O. Chapman, 70, of Hico, died June 13, 2010, at CAMC General Hospital, Charleston, following a short illness.

Born Feb. 18, 1940, he was the son of the late Frank and Annie Chapman. He also was preceded in death by a brother, James, and a sister, Theresa.

Bacil began working on cars at age 16. He spent his entire career as a master mechanic, having owned and operated Chapman’s Auto Parts in Hico for 18 years.

He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was an avid hunter and fisher and thoroughly enjoyed working in his garden.

Surviving: his loving wife of 51 years, Rita Holcomb Chapman; son, Tim (Melissa) Chapman of Beckley; daughters, Amanda (Michael) Thomas and Teana (Mark) Hess, both of Ansted, and Midge (Dennis) Criss of Scott Depot; special nephew and great-nephew, Tom and T.J. Chapman of Dale City, Va.; sisters, Lucille Pondek of Severna Park, Md., Betty Chapman, Nancy Boothe and Sharon Truslow, all of Verona, Va., and Joan Tanner of Ramsey; brothers, Jack and Darrell Chapman, both of Marion, Ohio, Donald Chapman of Ansted, and Charles Chapman of Marion, Ohio; grandsons, David and Curtis Thomas, Adam Criss, Nathan Hess, and Timothy II and Micah Chapman; granddaughters, Jennifer Hensley and Bethany McDaniel; great-grandchildren, Mia and Luci Thomas and Isaac and Caleb Hensley; and many special friends.

Services were June 16 at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home Chapel in Ansted with Rev. Jack Eades and Rev. Ron George Sr. officiating. Entombment followed at Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.

Thomas Henry Clark

Thomas Henry Clark, 83, of Beckwith, died June 14, 2010, at the Hidden Valley Nursing Center at Oak Hill.

Born Nov. 2, 1926, at Kanawha Falls, he was a son of the late Otie Sr. and Sarah Lewis Clark. Mr. Clark also was preceded in death by his brothers, James, Robert, Otie, George and John; and sisters, Florence Cline, Mary Cornell, Edith Clark and Margaret Clark.

Mr. Clark was a member of the Cotton Hill Missionary Baptist Church at Beckwith, a retired head tapper with Elkem Metals in Alloy and was a U.S. Army veteran during World War II.

Surviving: daughter, Debra Weaver of Beckwith; son, Thomas A. Clark and his wife, Lisa, of Windsor, Va.; daughter, Denise Bryant of Beckwith; son, Randy Clark and his wife, Becky, of Beckwith; sister, Arlene Propps of Oak Hill; grandchildren, Jeremy Weaver, April and her husband, Wesley Zemonek, Brandon Clark, Shannon Clark and Billy Bryant; great-granddaugher, Savannah Zemonek; and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 17, in the Cotton Hill Missionary Baptist Church at Beckwith with Pastor Danny Sears officiating. Interment will follow in the Huse Memorial Park in Fayetteville.

Lane Marie Hartman Cochran

Lane Marie Hartman Cochran, 69, of Loop Road, Sun, died May 29, 2010, at her home.

Born Sept. 16, 1940, at Oberlin, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Jeanette Cornwell Hartman. Her husband, Herman Cochran, and brothers, Allison Hartman and Dennis Hartman, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Cochran was a member of the Gatewood Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Surviving: her children, Raymond Cochran of Barstow, Calif., Margaret Hildebrand and husband Gerald of Oak Hill, Deborah Fleming and husband Roy of Oak Hill, and Aaron Cochran and wife Maggie of Lorain, Ohio; sisters, Shelley Braun of Glen Jean and Sherry Melady of Sparks, Nev.; brothers, Lynnie Hartman of Oberlin, and Gene Hartman, Galen Hartman, and Donnie Hartman, all of Barstow, Calif.; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Sunday, June 20, at Gatewood Baptist Church with Pastor Harry Fuller officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church.

Calvin W. ‘Wes’ Crist Jr.

Calvin W. “Wes” Crist Jr., 56, of Oak Hill, died June 6, 2010.

In keeping with his wishes private services were held, and Wes was laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Blanche Tyree Davis

Blanche Tyree Davis, 97, of Oak Hill, died June 10, 2010, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born June 3, 1913, at Lively, she was the daughter of the late Jefferson C. and Della E. Lively Tyree. Sister Mary Kesler and brothers Frank L. Tyree, Lawrence L. Tyree, Ross Tyree and Howard M. Tyree also preceded her in death.

Blanche was a 1930 graduate of Mount Hope High School. She was a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church, Oak Hill Business and Professional Women, AARP, Fayette County Retired School Employees and Senior Friends.

In 1932 Mrs. Davis began her teaching career at Lively. Over the next 45 years she taught at Willis Branch, Pax, Mount Hope and Oak Hill. She worked with Head Start for seven years and was a tutor with the Adult Literacy Program at Vo-Tech in Oak Hill.

Surviving: daughter, Malinda Davis of Snowshoe; brother, Lewis F. “Buster” Tyree of Santee, S.C.;  grandsons, Eric Ferguson of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Aaron Ferguson of New York City, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews, including Howard Bedford Tyree who was her caregiver.

Services were June 13 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Pete Lokant officiating. Entombment was at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill.

Roger Lee Davis

Roger Lee Davis, 61, of Scarbro, died June 5, 2010, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born Feb. 25, 1949, at Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Vaden and Bonnie Coleman Davis. A brother, Vaden “Chick” Davis, also preceded him in death.

Roger was a 1967 graduate of Collins High School in Oak Hill. He was a member of Oak Hill Lodge No. 120 A.F. and A.M. and Sewell Chapter No. 24 R.A.M.

Surviving: daughter, Amanda Davis of Oak Hill; son, Joseph R. Davis and wife Melonie of Kenley, N.C.; his former wife, Marjorie Lou Hatcher Davis; grandchildren, Jacob, Danielle, Maci and Paisley; aunts, Lessie Wriston of Oak Hill and Dana Wriston of Fayetteville; and his best friend, Mike Walton.

Mr. Davis was cremated. A memorial service was held June 12 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill.

Esther Virginia Fink

Esther Virginia Fink, 91, of Porter-Vinton Community, Ohio, formerly of Danese, died June 12, 2010, at Holzer Senior Care, Bidwell, Ohio, following a long illness.

Born Dec. 28, 1918, at Landisburg, she was the daughter of the late John Kyle and Tola Ann Aldridge King.

She married Oscar D. Fink on Sept. 7, 1940, in Catlettsburg, Ky., and he preceded her in death on Sept. 10, 1977. In addition to her parents and husband, she also was preceded in death by her only son, Robert Oscar “Bob” Fink, on Feb. 17, 2009; a brother, Charles King; and sisters, Jean Tolley, Mildred Pitzer and Josephine Neff.

Esther was an associate member of the UMWA, and had attended the Ewington Church of Christ in Christian Union, Ohio.

Her hobbies included a collection of dolls, crocheting, and quilting. She was a homemaker, wife, mother, and grandmother.

Surviving: grandson, Robert Andrew Fink of Vinton, Ohio; Robert’s mother, Betty Fink of Vinton, Ohio; a brother, Beauford King of Rainelle; and sisters, Cora Lee Proud of Lewisburg, and Alice Tolley of Danese.

Funeral services were June 16 at the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home in Vinton, Ohio, with the Rev. Chris Johnson officiating.

Local visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Thursday, June 17, at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Rainelle, followed by a graveside service and burial at 12:30 p.m. at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Mary Fisher

Mary Fisher, 66, of Oak Hill, died June 13, 2010, at her home.

Born Nov. 1, 1943, at White Oak, she was the daughter of Chandler J. Phillips and the late Katherine Wolfe Phillips. In addition to her mother, Mary was precceded in death by her loving husband, Roy Jackson Fisher; a brother, Charlie Bill Philips; and a sister, Gladys Phillips.

Mary was an outgoing and a fun individual to have known and could be found at White Oak Lanes where she bowled in league play for many years. Her neighbors could most always find her in the yard attending to her flower gardens. Mary will be sadly missed by her family and by all who knew her.

Surviving: her father, Chandler J. Phillps of Cowen; her children, Allan W. Phillips of Oak Hill, Richard C. Sizemore of Fayetteville, and James T. Sizemore and wife Diane of Fayetteville; her grandchildren, Wayne Phillips Jr., Heather Phillips, Ryan Sizemore and Rocky Plumley; and her siblings, Dudie Madden, Alice Adkins, Bud Phillips, Louise Southall and Drema Campbell.

Mr. Clifford W. McGhee, 70, of Greentown, died June 12, 2010, in Clinton, Md.

Vivian Frances Humphries Neal

Vivian Frances Humphries Neal, 100, of Oak Hill, died May 28, 2010, at Hidden Valley Nursing and Rehab Center in Oak Hill.

Born July 17, 1909, in Nicholas County, she was the daughter of the late Lilburn Nelson and Eva Hambrick Humphries. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Neal.

Mrs. Neal was a member of the Oak Hill First Presbyterian Church and a homemaker.

Surviving: her daughter, Joyce Warren and husband Howard of Oak Hill; grandchildren, Neal Warren of Rt 1 Fayetteville and Kathy Davis of Dothan; and great-grandchildren, Justin and Jarrod Warren and Mariah Kincaid.

Graveside rites and committal services, followed by burial, were May 29 at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill with Pastor David Thomas officiating.

Burl Allen Neff

Burl Allen Neff, 47, of Dothan, died June 7, 2010, at home after a very long illness.

Born Sept. 11, 1962, at Bickmore, he was the son of the late Leonard Lee and Georgie Shamblin Neff. A brother, Charlie, and sister, Linda Neff, also preceded him in death. 

Burl attended the Dothan Missionary Baptist Church and worked for an automobile tire changing business.

Surviving: daughter, Linda Lee Neff of Fayetteville; son, Daniel Gorgon of Oak Hill; brothers, Edgar Neff of New York, Woodrow Neff of Tennessee, Willis Neff of Pennsylvania and Clarence Shamblin of Oak Hill; sisters, Virginia Schoolcraft of Dothan, Ruby Ramsey of Fayetteville, Sally Pennington of Dothan, Sharon Adkins of Clay County and Krista Smith of Mossy; a loving aunt, Emogene Brown of Oak Hill; and several loving nieces and nephews.

Services were June 11, at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Pastor Lum Toney officiating. Burial was at Sunset Cemetery, Bickmore.

Lawrence E. Pearce

Lawrence E. Pearce, 78, of Fayetteville, died June 11, 2010, at home.

Born Dec. 24, 1931, at Youngsville, N.C., he was the son of the late Callie and Ophelia Hoyle Pearce. He also was preceded in death by sisters, Jewell Lee Pearce and Mildred Thorne; and a brother, Charles Pearce.

Mr. Pearce was retired president of Fayette County National Bank. After retiring from the bank he sold real estate at Cardinal Realty in Oak Hill.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Clarksville, Va.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and he was a member of American Legion Post 149, Fayetteville.

Surviving: his wife of 59 years, Joyce White Pearce of Fayetteville; daughter, Dawn Sedlock of Oak Hill; son, Ronnie Sedlock of Fayetteville; sister, Doris Coleman of Richmond, Va.; brothers, William Pearce and wife Alice of Richmond, Va., James Pearce of Winter Springs, Fla., Marvin Pearce of Raleigh, N.C., MacArthur Pearce and wife Margaret of Largo, Fla., Dwight Pearce of Norlina, N.C., and Daniel Pearce and wife Brenda of Nantucket, Mass.; grandson, Brian Sedlock of Fayetteville; granddaughter, Misty S. Smith and husband Alvie of Fayetteville; great-grandsons, Andrew and Luke Sedlock; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A memorial service was held June 16 at the Fayetteville Presbyterian Church, Fayetteville, with Rev. Clare Sulgit-Horn officiating.

Violet Naoma (Tiny) Plumley

Violet Naoma (Tiny) Plumley, 86, of Charlton Heights, died June 11, 2010, at the Hidden Valley Nursing Home, Oak Hill, with her loving husband, and daughter at her side, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s and other ailments.

Born Sept. 6, 1923, in Pear, Raleigh County, she was the youngest of six children of the late Fred and Naomi Plumley Patton. She also was preceded in death by her siblings, Edith Queen, Opal Hancock, Carl S. Patton, and James Opal Patton; an infant daughter, Debra Plumley; and grandson, Steven Wallace.

Tiny was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, and an avid reader. She was a member of Boomer Baptist Church for many years.

Surviving: her husband of 70 years, Boomer Ray Plumley; sister, Mildred Tench of Fayetteville; children, Ronald Ray Plumley of Lithia, Fla., Mark Alan and Beth Plumley of Charlton Heights, Carolyn Sue and Dave Stanley of Beckley, Judith Kay and Fred Brown of Charlton Heights, and Barbara Ann and Duffy Boyd of Fayetteville; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were June 14 at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with the Rev. Jackie Pittman officiating. Burial was in the Montgomery Memorial Park, London.

George Clifford Pomeroy

George Clifford Pomeroy, 85, of Hilltop, died June 11, 2010, at home following a terminal illness.

Born March 24, 1925, in Minden, he was the son of the late Elzie P. and Liona Catherine Simmons Pomeroy. He also was preceded in death by brothers, Paul Pomeroy and Shirley Pomeroy; sisters, Lottie M. Santiago, Margie Paley, and Naomi White; a son, Patrick Lee Pomeroy; and a son-in-law, Gaylon Wilkins.

Mr. Pomeroy served in the U.S. Army during World War II for six years and retired from General Motors after 35 years of service.

Surviving: his loving wife of almost 61 years, Joann Blethen Pomeroy of Hilltop; sons, Clifford Lee Pomeroy of Hilltop, George D. Pomeroy and Michael L. Pomeroy, both of Warren, Mich., and Elzie P. Pomeroy and his wife, Jenna, of Maynardsville, Tenn.; daughters, Christine C. Wilkins of Corryton, Tenn., Belinda J. Brumley and her husband, Rod, of Shelby Township, Mich., and Michelle L. Dail and her husband, David, of Oak Hill; sisters, Delphia Stewart of Peterstown, and Barbara Logan of Arizona; 40 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was June 15 at the Summerlee Wesleyan Church in Summerlee, with Pastor Tom Odom, his grandson-in-law, officiating. Burial followed in the High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Military rites were conducted by the Oak Hill VFW Post #3110.

Mary Mae Hambrick Scott

Mary Mae Hambrick Scott, 93, of Oak Hill, died June 15, 2010, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill.

Born July 7, 1916, at Woodville, she was the daughter of the late Alfred Jackson and Della Elizabeth Lafferty Hambrick. Her husband, Frank Scott; a son, Gerald “Jerry” Scott; brothers, Kenneth Hambrick, Robert Hambrick, Charlie Hambrick, Paul Hambrick and Alfred Hambrick; and a sister, Vivian Duff, also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Scott was a member of the Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene and a homemaker.

Surviving: daughters, Doris Stokey of Knoxville, Tenn., and Frankie Mae Sokoff of San Jose, Calif.; brother, Allen Hambrick of Charleston; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be on Saturday, June 19, at  2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Pastor Jerry Bush officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Maxine Thomas  Sydnor

Maxine Thomas Sydnor, 83, of Oak Hill, died June 12, 2010, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born Aug. 23, 1926, at Marytown, McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late William and Nannie Gilliam Thomas. She also was preceded in death by her husband, William Ralph “Sid” Sydnor, and a brother, Ralph “R.T.” Thomas.

Maxine was last employed by CO-MAC Bakery and was a longtime employee of the former White Oak Drug in Oak Hill.

She was a member of the First Church of God of Fayetteville and formerly attended the Jones Avenue Church of God in Oak Hill.

Surviving: her son, Richard Ralph “Pud” Sydnor of Oak Hill.

Funeral services were June 15 at the Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with Rev. Russell Hays officiating. Burial followed in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Pea Ridge Road, Oak Hill.
