Hartnett, a farmer, and Nellie Forrest Hartnett, a school teacher. He had four siblings: the late Dr. Bernard Hartnett, Donald Hartnett, Delores Hartnett Pope, and Coral Hartnett, all of upstate New York.

Victor was a World War II veteran who served in the Philippines and Okinawa, Japan. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and provided for his family by working as an electrician in many states and in Greenland.

In addition to his 10 biological and step-children Vic is called Grandpa by his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He and his family moved to Braxton County in 1976 and then to their much loved farm on Anthony Creek, Birch River, in 1980. Disabled in 1984, due to a well fought battle with esophageal cancer, he enjoyed working and maintaining the farm and running his bulldozer.
