Ivora Minnie Rhodes Scarbrough

Ivora Minnie Rhodes Scarbrough, 87, of Oak Hill, died April 19, 2014, at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley.

Born Feb. 24, 1927, at Cunard, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Cleo Cody Rhodes. Her husband of 67 years, Elmer R. Scarbrough, preceded her in death as did a son, Dexter P. Scarbrough; a grandson, “Baby Adam,” two brothers and one sister.

She was a retired nursing assistant.

Mrs. Scarbrough was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church in Beckley.

Surviving: daughter, Donna R. Pyles of Purcellville, Va.; sons, Delbert A. Scarbrough and wife Dela of Fredericksburg, Va., Douglas A. Scarbrough and wife Tammy of Enoree, S.C., Kavin D. Scarbrough and wife Gay of Rock Hill, S.C., and Ivan M. Scarbrough and wife Sheryl of Bluefield; brother, Henry Rhodes of Crescent City, Fla.; sisters, Lillian Roberts of Ohio, Ada Legg of Oak Hill, Ruby Rickard of Commerce Township, Mich., and Elsie Sexton of Fayetteville; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Thursday, April 24 at 2 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Dr. Sharon Miller officiating. Entombment will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the New River Humane Society, PO Box 955, Fayetteville WV 25840.

Elizabeth Jane Skaggs

Elizabeth Jane Skaggs, 85, of Gauley Bridge, died April 16, 2014, at home.

Born May 19, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Gib and Mary Backus. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Kelly Herman Skaggs, in January of this year.

She retired from Fayette County Board of Education after 28 years as a teacher and was a member of the Lovers Leap Baptist Church.

Surviving: her children, Saundra Rosewell and husband Wayne of Daniels, Robert Kelly Skaggs and wife Kimberly of Conway, S.C., Mark Skaggs and wife Jean of Fayetteville, Cody Skaggs and wife Sharon of Shallotte, N.C., and Theresa Cooper and husband Phillip of Gauley Bridge; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was April 19 at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Pastor Ron George and Rev. Jack Eades officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor.
