Henry Garland Adams

Henry Garland Adams, 93, of Oak Hill, formerly of Homestead, Fla., died Sept. 3, 2013, at Hidden Valley Center, Oak Hill.

Garland was born April 11, 1920, in Crumpler, Va., son of the late William Victor and Essie Day Adams. Garland also was preceded in death by his sister, Lottie, and brothers, Warren, Doug and Buford, and his beloved wife, Fern Grogan Adams.

Garland was a 1936 graduate of Mark Twain High School where he served as senior class president, captain of the football team and valedictorian.

He left Glenville State Teachers College during World War II to join the United States Navy serving as Chief Petty Officer.

He spent many years in Homestead, Fla., as a contractor and builder of fine homes in the Miami, Dade County area.

Surviving: his daughters, Mary Purvines of Chesterfield, Mo., and Susan Bouldin of Alderson; and by his sister, Jean Holtzapfel of Beckley.

The family will hold a private service to celebrate Garland’s life.

Kyle Lewis Allen Jr.

Kyle Lewis Allen, Jr., of Parkersburg, formerly of Beckley, died Sept. 5, 2013.

He was born Nov. 18, 1917, in Glen Jean, the son of the late Kyle Lewis Allen Sr. and Edith Walters Allen.

In 1940 he married Ruth Sunday, who preceded him in death in 2008. In addition to his wife, a sister, Evelyn Bragg, preceded him in death.

His lifetime career was as an automobile mechanic and service manager for Ford Motor Co. and GM.

He was an avid hunter and looked forward to spending time at his hunting cabin. His favorite times were with his friends at the camp swapping tales each hunting season.

Surviving: his daughter, Rose Ann Spencer; son, Kyle Lewis Allen III; granddaughter, Karen Boso; great-granddaughters, Megan and Kaitlyn Boso; brother, Ralph Allen; good friend, Carl Gheen; and special little friend, Aubrey Schenz.

Graveside rites and committal services, followed by burial, were Sept. 9 at Wayside Cemetery, Wayside, with Allen Hilton officiating.
