George Herman Ruth

George Herman Ruth, 81, of Oak Hill, died Jan. 3, 2013, at his home.

Born May 8, 1931, at Kilarney, he was the son of the late James Arthur and Ida Googe Ruth.

Mr. Ruth was a U.S. Navy veteran with 20 years’ service and the rank of Chief Boatsman’s Mate.

He was also retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church, Fayetteville.

Surviving: wife, Sandra “Sandy” Gail Cleary Ruth; sons, Robert George Ruth of West Milford and David Andrew Ruth of Oak Hill; sister, Shirley Bullington of Oceana; and grandchildren, Kristen Ruth and Kammie Ruth.

Funeral services were Jan. 5 at the Grace Baptist Church in Fayetteville with Rev. Delbert Walker officiating. Burial was at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Eva Loyal Smith

Eva Loyal Smith, 94, of Oak Hill, died Jan. 3, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House.

Born on Rush Run Mountain on June 4, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Lucy and Clark Berry. She also was preceded in death by all of her siblings; her daughter-in-law, Lane Cochran; and her pride and joy, her only child, Herman “Shorty” Cochran.

To all who knew her, Eva was known as “Granny.”

She was an avid Bingo player, loved gardening and canning, and took great joy in her family and friends.

Surviving: grandchildren, Raymond Cochran of Barstow, Calif., Margaret Hildebrand and Debbie Fleming, both of Oak Hill, and Aaron Cochran of Elyria, Ohio, and their spouses; 11 great-grandchildren, Amy Cochran Zahaczewski, Trista Cochran, Amaris Cochran, Regina Zamora, David Cochran, Chris Jauss, April Morris, Amber Reveal, Samantha Knapp, Trina Tellez, Brittany Beezley, and their spouses; 23 great-great-grandchildren; family members, B. Jo Kreft, Sue Gilkerson, Cora Morrison, Angie Loeffler, Dennis Williams, Doris Goins, Georgia Williams, Norma Seabolt Jr. Williams, Roy Lee Williams, and Billy Gale Skyles; special friends, David, Mary, Alysa, Kelsey and Jody Johns; and many other extended family and friends.

Graveside services were held Jan. 9 at Bibb Cemetery, Fayetteville, with Rev. Joe Cuthbertson officiating.
