Helen S. Smith

Helen S. Smith, 92, of Charlton Heights, died Dec. 30, 2012.

She was born June 25, 1920, at Scarbro, the daughter of the late Jerzy and Zuzanna Szlawer Suszka.  She also was preceded in death by her husband, William Biser Smith.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Montgomery.

She was a veteran of the Women’s Air Corps during World War II and she for a former employee of CVS Pharmacy in Montgomery.

Surviving: sons, William S. Smith and his wife, Victoria, of Corpus Cristi, Texas, George Keith Smith of Charlton Heights and Steven Eric Smith of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Gabriele Smith, Julie Smith, Eric Smith and Christopher Smith; and great-grandchildren, Landon, Jackson and Bradley.

Mass of Christian burial was Jan. 4 at Immaculate Conception Catholic in Montgomery with Fr. John Rice as celebrant. Burial followed in Montgomery Memorial Park at London.  

Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Lena Lucille Minnich Smith, 89, of Oak Hill, died Jan. 7, 2013.

Darlene Denise Sumpter

Darlene Denise Sumpter, 44, of Fayetteville, died Dec. 30, 2012, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, after a courageous battle with leukemia.

Born Jan. 26, 1968, she was the daughter of Dennis Davis and Sandra (Jones) Davis.

She was preceded in death by her father, Dennis Davis; brother, David Duncan Jr.; and uncle, Jimmy Jones.

Darlene graduated in the Class of 1986 from Oak Hill High School.

In 2009, she joined the Mossy Living Word Church.

She enjoyed driving a school bus for Fayette County Board of Education and her favorite pasttimes were taking pictures, bear hunting, fishing, and Sunday drives. She looked forward to attending her family reunion each year.

Surviving: her loving husband, Daniel Lee Sumpter; children, Daniel Lee Jackson Jr. and wife Megan of Mossy, and Brittney Nicole Menei and husband Nicholas of Bradley; brothers and sisters, Dwayne Baber of Minden, and Curtis Baber, Christine Lawhorn, and Daniel Duncan, all of Rock Lick; her mother, Sandra (Jones) Davis and her companion, David Duncan Sr.; uncle, Pete Jones of North Carolina; special uncle, Johnny Jones and his wife, Sandy, of North Carolina; special aunt, Betty Blosser of Ohio; aunt, Dorothy Jones of Dempsey; father-in-law, Eddie Higginbotham and Nancy; mother-in-law, Vivian Gilkeson and Butch of Rainelle; her only sister-in-law, Sue Higginbotham of Lester; grandchildren, Izabella and Layla; nieces and nephews, Carrie, Joseph, Angel, Brianna, Tianna, Candace, C.J., Mallory, Dwayne, Josh, and Jerry; a great-niece, Alonna; and Darlene was awaiting the arrival of her next grandchild in August.

Funeral service was held Jan. 4, at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1Oak Hill, with Pastor Paul Basham officiating. Burial followed in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill.
