MONTGOMERY — WVU Tech initiated Mid-South Conference baseball play recently with a trio of setbacks to the University of the Cumberlands at Epling Field.
On Saturday, March 15, the Golden Bears dropped 5-1 and 6-0 decisions, and on Friday the locals fell 10-9.
Steve Shultz and Justin Maynard provided hits for Tech in the shutout loss, while Tech registered nine hits in the 5-1 setback. Leading the way in that outing were Manny Zeno, who was 3-for-4, and Maynard, who was 2-for-4.
In the one-run decision Friday, Cumberlands built up a 7-3 lead and held off the Bears.
Gerardo Hernandez (2-for-3) and Philip Brockman (2-for-4) paced the Tech hitting attack. Brockman and Eric Helton each knocked in a pair of runs.
Trevor Urbanick (2-for-4) and Javier Gali-Rodriguez (2-for-3) both had two RBIs for the winners.
Adam Blakey earned the win by yielding five hits and fanning five in 4 1/3 innings. Tech starter Justin Kersey absorbed the mound loss.

The Golden Bears improved to 9-3 with a doubleheader split earlier in the week against Shawnee (Oh.) State University. Tech fell 6-0 in the first game, but rebounded to take the second game 4-1 at Epling Field.
In the first game, Shawnee took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a two-out single by Cory Pallutch and was never challenged.
Gabby Santiago accounted for Tech’s only hit. Jeremy Blackston went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the visitors. Victor Zayas took the loss for WVU Tech, striking out six but giving up 11 hits. Shawnee’s Justin Craft earned the win.
In the second outing, the Golden Bears jumped out to an early 3-1 lead after one inning. Tommy Nutt scored on a wild pitch, and Manny Zeno crossed home plate two batters later on a Phil Brockman hit to right. Brockman would later score when Danny Flores produced a blooper to center.
The Bears tacked on an insurance run in their half of the fifth. After Flores reached on a walk and Justin Maynard singled, Nutt singled to center to score Flores.
