Tucker duo heads Class A all-state

HAMBLETON — Tucker County senior forward L.J. Gravelle was named captain of the Class A all-state team Monday by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.
Gravelle, who averaged 19.1 points and 11 rebounds this past season, leaves Tucker County as the school’s all-time leading scorer.
Joining Gravelle as repeat members on the first team are Gilbert’s Quinn Miller and Brad Rawls.
Miller, a 6-2 senior, averaged 16.2 points per game, while Rawls, a 6-5 senior, hit for 17 ppg.
Gravelle’s teammate, Eric Wamsley, also is a first-team selection. The 6-4 senior averaged 17.2 ppg. He was a second-team selection in 2007.
Gravelle and Wamsley led the Mountain Lions to the state tournament, where they dispatched Meadow Bridge in the first round before falling to Charleston Catholic.
The remainder of the first unit includes Buffalo’s Adam Scott (18.1 ppg), Wirt County’s Jesse Ward (16 ppg), Burch’s Kevin Baisden (24 ppg) and Wheeling Central’s Shane Phillips, who averaged 11.2 points per game.
All first-team selections are seniors.
The second team is led by captain Matt Kiger, a 6-4 Williamstown junior who averaged 17 ppg.
Rounding out the second team was Pendleton County’s Josh Godfrey, Wheeling Central’s Cory McKitrick, Paden City’s Ricky Wright, Notre Dame’s Preston Musgrave, Midland Trail’s Tommy Stull (12.0 ppg), Trinity freshman A.J. Mayle and Matewan’s Brandon Burgraff.
Trinity’s Josh Pearson captains the third team. He’s joined by Wirt County’s Zach Moore, Meadow Bridge’s Billy Trump (13.5 ppg), Charleston Catholic’s John Baird, Greenbrier West’s Nathan Brackenridge, Greater Beckley Christian’s Josh Alston, Madonna’s Sal Conti and Pocahontas County’s Trevor Caplinger.
Also honored from Fayette County were: honorable mention — Dustin Nickell, Midland Trail; Davon Marion, Mount Hope; James Newkirk, Valley; Alex Preast, Fayetteville; Troy Hopkins, Fayetteville; and Trey Harvey, Valley.
