OAK HILL — The 2008 tournament season is looking bright for the Heiandjin-li Karate Dojo.
On March 15, Sensei Rick Pyatt and his instructor, Sensei Jim Grubb, took 17 of their students to Jamestown, Ohio for the 40th annual Ohio State Championship hosted by Sensei Don Madden, chairman of AKJU Team America.
“The AKJU is a tough organization and I am proud of all my students who went and competed,” said Pyatt.
In the event, participants who placed first in either karate, ju-jitsu, randori or gappling were awarded a certificate that is registered with the state of Ohio which says, “This person is recognized as an ‘All Ohioan Martial Artist’ and is No. 1 in the state of Ohio in their individual division.”
“I think that is something the students can really be proud of,” said Sensei Pyatt.
The students brought home a total of 44 trophies.
Heiandjin-li Karate had the following students who were registered with the state of Ohio: Elijah Pyatt, Noah Pyatt, Jason Bowles, Hannah Jiles, Leairra Avery, Samuel Lyke and Jordan Hart.
The dojo’s next tournament will be the Spring Showdown Open Martial Arts Championship, to be held on April 26 at Oak Hill High School. The dojo will have a yard sale and bake sale in order to raise money so all of the students can compete in this tournament. The sale will be held on April 4-5 from 8 a.m. onward, and will take place at the old Exxon on Main Street, next to Little Caesar’s Pizza in Oak Hill. Call Pyatt at 222-1509 for more information.
