FHS girls capture section crown

In girls sectional softball play Thursday:



Fayetteville 13, Midland Trail 0

Host Fayetteville jumped on Midland Trail with an eight-run first inning en route to the shutout in the Class A Region 3, Section 3 title game Thursday.

Pitcher Shandi Myles was perfect for five innings, striking out five, walking none and holding Trail hitless as Fayetteville coasted over its county rival.

For FHS (16-7), Amber Spearen went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs, Beth George (2-for-3) and Destiny Coleman plated two runs apiece, and Myles knocked in a run.

A young Midland Trail squad finished the campaign with a 10-11 record.

Fayetteville advances to face the winner of Big Creek/Montcalm at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Fayetteville in the Region 3 semifinals.

Meadow Bridge 10

Richwood 9



Greenbrier West 12, Meadow Bridge 0

Meadow Bridge’s Brittany Lusk went 4-for-4 with a triple, a double and two RBIs in a Class A Region 3, Section 1 win over Richwood.

Also for the Wildcats, Kelly Forren was 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs.

In the second game, Meggan Midkiff had a double and a triple and scored three runs to lead Greenbrier West to its first-ever sectional title. Kayla Richardson had a double and a run for Cavaliers (14-16).

For Meadow Bridge, Lusk was 1-for-2 and Forren absorbed the loss on the mound.

Shady Spring 7

Oak Hill 0



Independence 7, Oak Hill 0

The Red Devils’ fine season came to an end Thursday with two losses in Class AA Region 3 play.

Against Shady, Sara Baber had a leadoff bunt single in the first inning and Brittany Jackson lined a single to right in the seventh for the only Red Devil hits.

Baber and Desiree Hughes collected singles for Oak Hill (19-5) in the nightcap.

Erin Wilson was tagged with both pitching losses.



Charleston Catholic 9, Valley 0



The Irish girls blanked the Greyhounds Thursday at Riverside High School.

Pitcher Ally Hoyer struck out 13 and issued one walk to pace Catholic, which got a 2-for-4 hitting performance from Marty Wilcox that included a homer and four RBIs.

Emily Donato, Rachael Hamrick and Caitlin Elliott produced singles for the ‘Hounds.
