OH girls, Webster boys win overall Lions titles

With 119 points, the Oak Hill girls held off Charleston Catholic (102) and the rest of the teams in a large field in the recent Fayetteville Lions Club Invitational track and field meet at John P. Duda Stadium.
The Red Devils got individual blue-ribbon performances from Deja Jones (100-meter dash in 12.55 seconds), Shakilya Cosby (200 in 26.63 and 400 in 1:01.32), Neaire Miller (800 in 2:32.43 and 1600 in 5:42.53), and Brittney Thomas (discus in 110 feet, 6 inches).
Oak Hill also got relay wins in the 4x200 and 4x400.
Mount Hope’s Cindy Hillberry was also a local winner, logging a 40-4 effort in the shot put.
On the boys side, Webster County tallied 77 points to finish ahead of runner-up Greenbrier West (71) and the rest of the field. The Highlanders got first-place showings from Skyler McCoy (800 in 1:59.7), Chance McCoy (300 hurdles in 40.91), Timmy Miller in the high jump (6-2) and Kody Short in the pole vault (12-6).
Bluefield’s Ansel Ponder was a double-winner (100 in 11.7 and 200 in 23.45). Tim Patterson and Andrew Humphrey were individual winners for Oak Hill. Patterson crossed first in the 400 (51.72) and Humphrey captured the long jump (19-10).
In Class A team competition, the Charleston Catholic girls and Greenbrier West boys were the top teams.
The girls field high point award went to Mount Hope’s Hillberry, who scored 18 points. The track high point was earned by Oak Hill’s Cosby, who tallied 22.5.
In the boys division, high point winners were Liberty’s Dominique Cangemi (16 points in the field) and Bluefield’s Ponder (20 points in track).

Oak Hill teams placed second (girls) and third (boys) in Friday’s Class AA Region 3 championships at UC’s Laidley Field. With 167 points, Shady Spring won the girls title, and Webster claimed the boys crown with 148.5.
In Class A Thursday at Charleston, the Meadow Bridge girls placed third with 98 points and the Mount Hope girls were fourth with 75. In the boys division, the Mustangs led local finishers with 70 points for third, and the Fayetteville Pirates placed fourth with 57.
Richwood captured both team titles, with the Lumberjack girls outscoring Greenbrier West 138-102 and the RHS boys outpacing West 173.5-104.5.

In recent Coalfield Conference Class A competition, the Richwood boys and girls swept team trophies. The RHS girls tallied 194 points, while Meadow Bridge was third with 93, Mount Hope fourth with 68 and Midland Trail fifth with 41. The Lumberjack boys recorded 203 points. Mount Hope was third with 67, Fayetteville fourth with 59, Midland Trail fifth with 32 and Meadow Bridge sixth with 17.
Mount Hope’s Chesare Spadaro was a quadruple-winner to lead her team. She won the 100 (13.48), 200 (28.12), long jump (14-5 1/2) and pole vault (8-0). Her teammate, Cindy Hillberry, was a double-winner (shot put in 37-6 and discus in 99-9). Other local winners included Meadow Bridge’s Dee Richmond (800 in 2:53), and Meadow Bridge’s Mariah Tincher in the 3200 (15:25). Midland Trail’s top finisher was Paige Skaggs, who logged second-place finishes in the shot and discus.
In the boys division, the Mustangs got individual wins from Davon Marion (100 in 11.67 and high jump in 5-8) and Kyle James (pole vault in 7-0). Donald McDowell’s second-place finish in the 100 (11.76) led Fayetteville, Will Deskins’ third-place effort in the 100 (11.98) and fourth-place showing in the 200 (24.44) paced Midland, and Patrick Kincaid’s third-place finish in the shot put (41-2 1/2) led Meadow Bridge.
