Midland’s Mercer all-state soccer pick

Midland Trail senior forward Shay Mercer was chosen as a first-team Class AA-A all-state soccer team member by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association late last week.

Mercer scored 18 goals in the regular season for the Patriots.

Captaining the elite squad is Pocahontas County’s Madeline Jerome.

Oak Hill forward Heather Stevens, Oak Hill midfielder Kelly Lyke and Midland Trail midfielder Hannah Fitzwater were each chosen to the second team.

Local honorable mention choices included Cari Minter of Midland Trail and Cassie Molchanoff of Oak Hill.
