Golf tourney to be held in memory of Stafford

To kick-off a three-day weekend celebration in Mount Hope, the Mountain of Hope Organization will host the first annual Tommy Stafford Memorial Fundraiser Golf Tournament Friday, Oct. 6.

The weekend will be filled with events, including the 22nd annual Jubilee and the 2012 Sentimental Journey Prom.

Jerry Adams, treasurer of the Mountain of Hope Organization, said he stepped in to help plan the golf tournament.

June Keffer has been working tirelessly for months planning and organizing the Sentimental Journey Prom. She wanted to incorporate another event into the weekend, Adams said, but her plate was full with the prom.

Over 600 Mount Hope High School alumni have confirmed to attend the prom and Adams says he hopes to see a great turnout for the golf tournament.

The tournament will both raise funds for the Mountain of Hope Organization, which is a non-profit that provides scholarships and job opportunities to youth in Fayette and Raleigh counties, as well as honor Tommy Stafford, a Mount Hope High School alumni who recently passed away.

“Tom Stafford was very well-liked, involved in business, and had served on the Fayette County Board of Education,” Adams said.

He contacted Stafford’s wife Deanna, as well as their son, Shane, to see if they would allow Stafford’s name to be used in the golf tournament.

“His family seemed to be honored to be in this as well and to represent him.”

Adams said after working with both Sen. Joe Manchin and Jim Justice, they were able to secure Glade Springs to host the tournament.

Many folks will be staying at the Glade Springs Resort during the weekend, which has offered discounted rates. The cost to golf in the tournament is also a reduced rate of $75.

“We’re really excited,” Adams said. “We’re going to have a lot of people coming.”

He encourages everyone to be registered by Sept. 15. Sponsorship packages are also still available.
