WVU Tech men go 2-1 in N.C. hoops event

The Tech wrestling squad rebounded from a disappointing performance last Tuesday to rally from a 12-point deficit against Penn State Mont Alto and earn a 27-15 victory.

Held at Westminster High School, where Tech head coach Sam Gardner taught for nine years and coached the Owl wrestlers for two, the Nittany Lions built a 12-0 lead after the first three matches on the strength of two decisions and a fall before Tech (4-2) rallied.

“I like the fact that we were able to rebound from a poor performance (a hard-fought 36-6 road loss against Division II foe Alderson-Broaddus), put it behind us, and get back to having the kinds of performances on the mat we are capable of,” said Gardner. “We got out of the box pretty slow in our first three matches, but the kids came on strong late in the periods to narrow the leads, which shows conditioning, spirit and guts. We need to get on the offense more quickly in those bouts if we want to continue to grow as a team.”

The Bears then completed a busy week on the mats by going 3-1 at the Green Terror Duals at McDaniel College in Westminster, Md. on Saturday. Tech improved to 7-3 on the year.

Tech will host Tennessee Temple on Dec. 6, and then travel to Southern Virginia on Dec. 7 to participate in the annual Turkey Bowl tournament.
