Aidan Payton of Nicholas County and Jason Weitzel of PikeView posted individual victories in the high school division of the Independence Invitational cross country meet Tuesday at New River Park.
Payton improved her standing as the race progressed and covered the challenging 3.1-mile course in 24 minutes, 28 seconds to capture the girls title. She was trailed by PikeView’s Katelyn Odle (2nd in 25:03) and PikeView’s Sophie Klein (3rd, 25:09).
Weitzel crossed the line first in the boys division with a clocking of 18:41. He was chased to the line by runner-up Cody Gillespie (18:49) of Oak Hill and third-place Nick Oxendale (19:45) of Oak Hill.
With 37 points, PikeView copped the girls team title. Shady Spring (74) was runner-up.
Oak Hill cruised to the boys team championship with 47 points. Westside was second with 140.
Other OHHS placers included: Kris Balsamo, 8th, 20:52; Jacob Ashcraft, 15th, 21:38; Nicholas Treadway, 19th, 22:19; Ricky Epperly, 27th, 23:00; and Seth Blake, 30th, 23:09.
The Oak Hill girls placed fourth with 101 points. Leading the way was Erin Heeter, who was 13th in 27:55. Other finishers were: Hannah Fridley, 18th, 30:04; Brianna Baker, 19th, 30:13; Ashton Young, 21st, 30:22; McCayla Greenwood, 37th, 36:46; and Cassidy Greenwood, 42nd, 42:38.
The annual Oak Hill Invitational, featuring numerous high school and middle school teams from the region, will be held Tuesday on the OHHS campus.
