Brown tabbed to replace Raines

— Wes Brown hails from Nicholas County, but he pledges to fully embrace Oak Hill High School.

Brown, 44, was hired recently to replace Walt Raines as head coach of the Red Devil boys basketball squad.

“Mr. Payton (Tim, OHHS principal) gave me the chance, and now I bleed red and black,” said Brown.

He was hired as a ninth-grade math teacher at OHHS shortly before Raines submitted his resignation over the summer. “I was with those kids (OHHS basketball players) all spring and summer. Now we’re working to try to put together a (coaching) staff.”

Brown said he has one opening filled by “a really great coach who’s been around basketball a long while.”

“I’m ready to get started,” he said. “There are some big shoes to fill (at Oak Hill).”

Brown, who is president and general manager of radio station WCWV 92.9 FM in Summersville, was head coach of the Nicholas County boys basketball team for nine years ending with the 2009-10 campaign.

“When I took over we had one win, and our winning percentage increased each year,” he said.

Brown expects his teams to play “up-tempo” basketball and “spread the ball out and attack the rim.” Defensively, he predicts “a little bit of a mix.”

“We have to work to our advantages and our strengths,” added Brown, a father of three.

His wife, Sarah Meadows Brown, is a Nicholas County magistrate. Their house has been put up for sale, he said.

Raines resigned this summer after coaching Oak Hill for one season. He remains on the school staff.
