In recent WVU Tech sporting events:

-- Second-half defensive pressure and 83 percent shooting from the charity stripe propelled the Golden Bear men’s basketball team to a 73-67 victory and season sweep over Virginia University at Lynchburg.

The Dragons entered intermission with the 32-26 lead, but Tech utilized a 13-4 run early in the second half to take a 39-36 lead. Junior Brandon Burgraff shot a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc while defensive pressure by guards Eddie Gordon and David Rawlinson caused six consecutive VUL turnovers. The Bears increased their lead down the stretch.

Sophomore Jaren Marino led the way with 18 points and eight boards. Rawlinson had 17 points, seven boards and seven assists. Burgraff also contributed 17 points, shooting 5-for-8 from 3-point territory.

Tech (16-10) hosts Ohio Mid-Western College at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

-- The women’s basketball team dropped a 55-52 game at Virginia University at Lynchburg. Tech built up a 10-point lead before the hosts regrouped and powered back with a 6-2 run to close the half.

The Lady Dragons opened the second half with an 8-1 run to take their first lead of the game. The margin had increased to 10 points with 8:00 remaining, but the Golden Bears powered back in the closing minutes of the game. Senior Courtney Sturdivant made a bucket to trim the deficit to two in the final seconds, but a last-second 3-pointer by Tracee Mitchel came up short.

 Amber Tully led the way for Tech with 11 points and eight rebounds. Amy Gardner edged closer to the 1,000 career points mark by adding nine points and four rebounds. Nia Nolan also contributed nine points and four rebounds while tallying six assists.

The Golden Bears (12-13) return to action on Saturday, Feb. 16 when they host Point Park University on Senior Day at 2 p.m.

-- The Tech men’s baseball team was swept in its season opener, 6-5 and 5-2, by defending NAIA national champion and No. 1 ranked Tennessee Wesleyan College in doubleheader action last weekend. The Bulldogs (4-3) picked up a 13-2 win in Sunday’s third game.

Tech jumped to a 3-0 lead in the opener, led by Ryan Kessinger’s run-scoring double and RBI singles by Jose Soto and Zach Sizemore.

The Bulldogs rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom half of the third inning behind a two-run home run by Wes Minton, and they later provided enough offense to secure the victory.

TWC pitcher Brady Frey claimed his first victory of the year, while sophomore Taylor Carter suffered the loss.

The Bulldogs claimed a 5-2 victory in the second outing. Sophomore pitcher Craig Johnson dropped to 0-1 on the season after five innings of quality work.

Senior Grant Williams led the way for the Golden Bears with three hits and one RBI for the two-game series.

“Today was a typical opener,” said Tech coach Lawrence Nesselrodt. “We had some mental and physical errors, but I saw many positives.

“We had a great opportunity to play the defending national champions and came close to beating them in the first game. Overall, we got better today as a team.”

Sizemore and Colton Ruley had RBI singles in the third game for Tech.

This Saturday, Feb. 16, Tech travels to North Carolina to face St. Andrews University in a three-game series.
