Pioneers edge Bears 96-95

GLENVILLE — Visiting WVU Tech battled back from an 18-point second-half deficit Tuesday but missed a shot at the buzzer and fell 96-95 to the Glenville State Pioneers.

Tech had an early six-point lead before the Pioneers claimed their first margin, 20-19, off a Jamel Morris jumper. Several lead changes followed until a late Glenville surge resulted in a 43-37 lead for the hosts at halftime.

Glenville continued to build on its lead in the second half, until it owned an 18-point cushion with 11:28 remaining. Behind strong  defensive play and clutch 3-pointers by Terrale Clark, David Rawlinson and Jaren Marino and defense and interior play by Kornilous Donnell, Tech clawed back in the contest.

Rawlinson, the USCAA men’s Division I player of the week, led the Golden Bears’ effort, dropping in 34 points while accumulating four assists and three rebounds. On the night, he was 14-of-19 from the field, including 4-of-6 from behind the 3-point line. Donnell, a junior transfer, had a breakout game for Tech, scoring 21 points and pulling down 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. With 14 points and 11 boards, Clark, a senior guard, registered his fourth double-double of season.

For the Pioneers (2-1), Morris finished with 27 points and six assists, Kevin Gray scored 21, and Lamar Mallory collected 18 points and 12 rebounds.
