The Fayetteville Middle School basketball teams both opened the 2012-13 season with wins over Peterstown last Wednesday at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building. The Pirate girls earned a 23-16 triumph, while the boys coasted to a 39-12 defeat of Peterstown.
According to coach Phil Samples, the Fayetteville girls jumped out to a 14-2 halftime lead and held on for the win.
“Our defense had a great first half, shutting out Peterstown in the first quarter and then holding them without a basket in the second quarter (Peterstown was 2-of-7 from the free throw line),” he said. “That allowed us to play several new younger players in the second half.”
Kendall Malay tallied 12 points to lead the FMS girls. Others in the scoring column included: Hannah Franklin, 5; Savannah Kincaid, 2; Samantha Holbrook, 2; Faith Norris, 1; and Rachel Mankins, 1.
Sydney Ballard led Peterstown with 12 points. Haleigh Ballangee added two and Kelli Ellison and Kelsey Allen one each.
The Fayetteville boys took control with a 15-0 first-quarter margin and led 39-8 heading into the final period.
A 10-point effort from Ricky Meadows paced a balanced FMS scoring attack. Other point-producers were: Will Fenton, 9; Dalton Dempsey, 8; Micah Bates, 4; Stevie Price, 4; Jonathan Ramsey, 2; and Jordan Dempsey, 2.
Peterstown scorers were: Evan Beasley, 4; Ashton Carr, 3; Bradley McConnell, 3; and Matthew Meadows, 2.
Both teams played Greater Beckley Christian on Monday.
The Fayetteville girls will play in the Peterstown Holiday Tournament at Peterstown Middle School on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 5 and 6, while the Pirate boys hosted Sts. Peter and Paul Christian School last night.
