Flying Eagles win Wood Bat tourney

— Woodrow Wilson has a championship under its belt, but the most important thing about this week for the Flying Eagles — as with most teams — was just getting to play.

Behind another stellar pitching performance, more solid defense and an improving offense, Woodrow defeated Greenbrier West 13-2 Saturday to win the Spring Break Wood Bat Classic in Fayetteville.

The Flying Eagles evened their record at 4-4 after winning all three of their tournament games.

“We easily could be 6-2 or 7-1,” coach Mark Daniel said. “We have left a lot of runners on base.”

Not this time. Woodrow pounded out nine hits in the six-inning win, punctuated by its six runs in the top of the sixth.

Hunter Greco, Logan Wriston, Hunter Halstead and Cole Williams all had two hits for the Eagles, who lost to Wyoming East in the championship of last year’s inaugural tournament. Wriston drove in three runs and Halstead two.

Josh Rakes (1-1) picked up the win, striking out seven over four innings.

Daniel said the pitching and the defense have been as good as he expected.

“Everybody we have been sending out there (to pitch) has been outstanding,” said Daniel, whose staff has a 2.41 earned run average. “If you have good pitching and good defense, you will be in every game.”

Offensively, Woodrow is batting .306 as a team, led by Greco at .462. Wriston is hitting .409, Halstead .400 and Metrick .296.

Despite dropping to 2-5 with the loss, the Cavaliers have shown signs of improving with the weather. They dropped a close 7-5 game to Independence Tuesday, then beat Wyoming East and Nicholas County in the Fayetteville tournament.

Nicholas County beat Fayetteville 8-1 in the consolation game. Wil Mayes tossed a complete-game two-hitter for the Grizzlies and also had three hits.
