James “Kenny” Howell has been named athletic director at West Virginia University Institute of Technology.
“Kenny brings extensive athletic and administrative leadership experience to the role,” said Campus President Carolyn Long. “With Kenny’s leadership, I look forward to continuing the athletic and academic success of current, as well as future, Golden Bear student-athletes.”
Howell has more than 11 years of experience in athletics, eight of which has been at WVU Tech in a variety of capacities. Throughout his career, Howell has been an athlete, coach, administrator and director of intercollegiate athletics at the NCAA II, NAIA and USCAA levels.
Howell has been the interim athletic director at WVU Tech since the fall of 2013, when the WVU Tech men’s soccer team won the USCAA National Championship. Regarding other departmental achievements, Howell said, “During the past eight years, WVU Tech has seen tremendous successes including a record number of total victories (120), conference titles (3) and multiple years with 80 or more student-athletes on academic honor roll.”
“My goal is to continue working with students and strive to provide quality student-athlete experiences, while staying true to the WVU Tech institutional mission of Recruit, Retain and Rebuild,” he said.
Howell will officially begin his role as athletic director on June 16.
