Hardwood action stays hot

In recent high school basketball contests:



Mount Hope 77, Mountain View Christian 48



Kyle James scored a game-high 28 points Tuesday to lead Mount Hope to the win Tuesday. Teammate Richard Swain added 13 points.

Tyler Stover led the Patriots with 14 points, while Thomas Prevost contributed 13.

The Mustangs (7-3) visit Richwood Thursday.



Meadow Bridge 44, Mount Hope 21



Chandra Harrah had 10 points to lead the Wildcat girls to victory.

Kristen Redden and Cayli Bolen added nine points each to the winners’ effort.

Mount Hope was led by Brandie Gore, who produced a game-high 12 points.

Meadow Bridge visits Greater Beckley Friday.



Oak Hill 58, Westside 47



By turning back the Renegades on Monday, the Class AA No. 2 Red Devils did their part to set up a championship game with Wyoming East in the Class AA portion of the Big Atlantic Classic in Beckley. In the other bracket, Wyoming East defeated Poca.

Jack Flournoy collected 23 points and 21 rebounds and Kalif Wright added 18 points as the Red Devils got by Westside.

“We made a lot of mistakes, especially defensively,” said Oak Hill coach Fred Ferri. “And we shot very poorly.”

Oak Hill (10-1) hosts Nicholas County Friday in a makeup game. Then, the Devils play the Warriors at 2 p.m. Saturday for the double-A title.

“We just have to play better,” said Ferri, whose squad lost 70-64 in the first meeting with Wyoming East this season. “We have to get some things straight defensively, but you can’t win if you don’t shoot well.”

At mid-week, Wright was Oak Hill’s leading scorer with a 20.9 points per game average. He’s also pulling down 11.2 rebounds an outing. Flournoy follows with 19.7 points and 9.0 rebounds, and DeAndré Leonard is averaging 11.6 points and 7.5 rebounds.



Fayetteville 59, Independence 47



Nich Carte scored 22 points as the Pirates turned the tables Monday on the Patriots, who had posted a victory at Fayetteville last Thursday.

Corey Goodman tallied 18 points for Fayetteville.



Midland Trail 71, Valley 39



For the second time this season, the Greyhound boys suffered a lopsided setback to Midland Trail.

The host Patriots hiked their record to 8-3 with the Monday win, while Valley dipped to 7-4.

Joey Fox scored 19 points and Kelly Minter garnered 13 points and eight rebounds for the Patriots.

For Valley, Cameron Cochran tallied 13 points.

Midland Trail plays at Mount Hope on Friday.

The Greyhounds host the Mustangs on Tuesday, Feb. 9. They entertain Charleston Catholic on Friday, Feb. 12.



Fayetteville 76, Mount Hope 45



The Pirates got a 27-point output, including seven three-pointers, from senior Nich Carte Friday as they whipped visiting Mount Hope.

Fayetteville (6-4) owned a 20-11 lead after eight minutes and steadily built on that cushion.

Also for the Pirates, MichaelAngelo Hernandez and Drew Weis supplied 10 points each. Other scorers were: Corey Goodman, 3; Brandon Doyle, 4; Dylan Young, 8; Chris Hill, 7; Charles Briscoe, 4; Mark Braskey, 2; and Tylor Tabit, 1.

Kyle James and Eric Canaday scored 12 points each for Mount Hope (7-3). Also in the scoring column were: Richard Swain, 5; Nick Amick, 2; Sean Bunting, 2; Deon Marion, 3; Michael McFarland, 4; Tyler Pennington, 2; and Brian Hatcher, 2.



Meadow Bridge 69, Montcalm 46



Tyler Bennett pumped in 20 points Monday as the Wildcats advanced their record to 8-4.

Tyler Vandall chipped in 12 and Brandon Adkins 10 for MB.

Jabe Meadows scored 15 for Montcalm.

Meadow Bridge outscored the Generals 49-24 in the middle two quarters to secure the road win.



Valley 45, Meadow Bridge 43



The Valley High girls escaped with a 45-43 win over Meadow Bridge Monday night, raising their record to 7-4 on the season.

Freshman Alexis Payne scored 20 points as the Greyhounds withstood a late Wildcat rally.

Valley led 34-25 before Meadow Bridge outscored the ’Hounds 18-11 in the final frame.

Besides Payne’s scoring, Valley also got 12 points from Harley Abbott.

Holly Gunnoe and Chandra Harrah had 11 each for Meadow Bridge (6-8).



Meadow Bridge 66, Van 31



Holly Gunnoe’s 19-point showing paced the Wildcat girls Friday.

MB teammates Kristen Redden and Chandra Harrah provided 12 and 11 points, respectively. Other scorers included: Chandra Church, 2; Chelsea White, 2; Cayli Bolen, 6; Laira Forren, 3; Sarah Fleshman, 4; Allison Gilkerson, 5; and Ashley Wickline, 2.



Fayetteville 60, Midland Trail 49



The Pirate girls outpointed their rivals 28-15 in the second half Friday to nail down the victory.

Shandi Myles’ 15-point performance paced three Fayetteville players in double figures in the scoring column. Jessica Brown added 13 and Beth Murphy had 10. Other point-producers were: Kara Evans, 6; Hannah Mitchell, 7; Destiny Belmont, 4; Erica Hogan, 6; and Courtney Smith, 1.

Kennedy Cochran netted 16 to lead Midland. Teammates Hannah Legg (12 points) and Allison Syner (11) also supplied double-digit offense. Other scorers were: Cari Minter, 4; and Sarah Vest, 6.



Greenbrier West 49, Oak Hill 41



The Red Devil girls led 13-8 after the first quarter but the Cavaliers eventually prevailed.

For Oak Hill, Quartney Settle and Neaire Miller scored 12 points each, and Hailey Horn tossed in 11.

Kaysha Burkholder scored 12 for West.



Valley 52, Mount Hope 30



On Friday, the Greyhound girls posted the triumph over the Mount Hope Mustangs.

Alexis Payne netted 21 points to lead the way, while Harley Abbott chipped in eight.

Keisha Lee led Mount Hope with 12.
