Colts topple Valley; NMS boys defeat Ansted; Pirate girls fall

The Mount Hope Colts continued their solid basketball play Tuesday, trimming host Valley 33-32.

The Colts’ Rondale Watson canned a pair of free throws with 0:04.9 to go, and Valley’s Raeshawn Breckenridge hit a three-pointer at the buzzer but the Greyhounds came up one point short.

For Mount Hope, Jalen Jones scored 14 points and Watson chipped in 12. Antonio Gray scored four and Josh Jones contributed three.

Breckenridge led Valley (8-4) with nine points. Other scorers were: Keyshawn Payne, 4; Darius Hutchinson, 2; Joseph Eckert, 6; Zac Warden, 8; and Henry Barron, 3.

The Valley Middle boys rebounded from a setback to Collins last week by doubling up host Fayetteville, 38-19, on Monday. The Greyhounds raced to a 14-2 lead after one quarter and led 25-5 at intermission.

Valley (8-3) was led by Raeshawn Breckenridge’s 14-point effort. Others in the scoring column were: Keyshawn Payne, 8; Zac Warden, 4; Henry Barron, 9; and Damaria Davis, 3.

William Dooley scored seven to lead the Pirates. Other scorers included: Jake Alton, 3; Justin Workman, 2; Joshua Long, 2; Logan Christian, 2; Caleb Bailes, 1; and Nicholas Girod, 2.

Also recently, the Nuttall boys earned a slim 24-23 victory over rival Ansted on Jan. 28.

NMS coach Richard Petitt said, “The game was a hard-fought battle back and forth in its entirety.”

AMS held a 13-10 lead at halftime. According to Petitt, his squad’s defensive effort in the second half was crucial as the Generals avenged two earlier-season lopsided losses.

The Generals were led in scoring by the efforts of Collin Carte, who tossed in nine points. Other point-producers were: Austin Burdette, 7; Forrest White, 5; and Ryan Dixon, 3.

Rickie Carter tallied 12 points to power the Trailblazers. Dallas Miller added eight and Larry Cavett had three.

On Monday, the Fayetteville girls came up on the short end of a 21-17 overtime decision at home against Valley.

Fayetteville blanked Valley 6-0 in the first quarter, Valley posted a 7-0 score in the second, Fayetteville responded with a 6-0 margin in the third, and the Greyhounds outscored the Pirates 7-2 in the last regulation period to force OT.

“It was a very competitive game,” said FMS coach Phil Samples. “Valley was able to seal the victory by making seven out of 14 foul shots in OT.

“It was a good defensive game.”

For the game, the ‘Hounds were 9-of-23 at the line, while the Pirates were just 1-of-5.

Avina Sedlock recorded six points, 12 rebounds and six steals to lead Fayetteville. Kaitlyn Sisler had six points and seven rebounds, and Alysia Sedlock had two points and seven boards. Also, Sarah Roehrig contributed two points and Hannah Samples netted a free throw.

Valley got 11 points from Abby Buchan. Kelsey Bird added eight and Keira Walker had two.
