Smith, Eddy big winners in Gristmill Grinder race

The 10th annual Babcock Gristmill Grinder was contested on April 19, and veteran race director Donnie Hudspeth was enthused with how the half-marathon (13.1 miles) foot race unfolded.

“We had a record turnout with pretty much perfect conditions for our 2014 Gristmill Grinder,” Hudspeth said on the race website, “I am so psyched about how it all went. Many new faces took the tour this year and from the comments it was two thumbs up on the course.

“We also had a strong group of Babcock vets and locals who put on a great showing. We had fast times, lots of smiling faces and an awesome crew of volunteers.”

Huntington’s Robert Smith was the overall winner with a clocking of one hour, 23 minutes, 40.2 seconds. Course record-holder Joel Wolpert, of Belington, placed second with a clocking of 1:28:52.6. Third was Andrew Shaffer, of Canvas, in 1:30:36.2.

The women’s overall winner was Kristin Eddy, of Herndon, Va., who posted a time of 1:45:18.9. Runner-up was Scott Depot’s Megan Truelove (1:50:12.7). Third was Hurricane’s Chera Gainer (1:50:28.8)
