The WVU Tech men’s basketball team dropped a 77-70 decision at home Monday to Shawnee State University.
The loss, Tech’s third straight, dropped the Golden Bears to 8-4 heading into a contest last night at Longwood (Va.) University.
Senior guard Brandon Burgraff had a team-high 19 points for the Golden Bears. Junior forward Jauries Thomas finished with a double-double with 15 rebounds and 10 points. Thomas has led Tech in rebounds eight times this season.
Senior forward Armond Perez rounded out the top contributors for Tech by scoring 17 points. The senior also recorded four boards, three assists and a steal. Junior guard Leon Cooper Jr. chipped in six points to go with his four rebounds and three assists.
As a team, Tech shot 37.1 percent (26-for-70) from the field overall and 24.0 percent (6-for-25) from 3-point range. Shawnee State countered with shooting percentages of 42.2 percent (27-for-64) from the field, including 36.4 percent (8-for-22) from 3-point territory. The visitors also outrebounded Tech 47-42.
Tech tied up the ball game, 10-10, with 16:02 left in the first half on a field goal from Perez off a Thomas assist. Shawnee State rallied over the following 14 minutes to lead by 12, 36-24, going into the second half.
The Golden Bears got within four points, 72-68, after Burgraff converted a steal into a jumper in the paint with 1:15 to go,but Shawnee went on a 5-2 run to end Tech’s thoughts of a comeback win.
Trevor Banks produced 16 points and nine boards to lead Shawnee State (6-3). Mark Bryant added 14 points.

The United States College Athletic Association (USCAA) named WVU Tech sophomore Dirk Ponchak as wrestler of the week on Nov. 26.
This past week, Ponchak, an Ohio native, went 5-0 at 157 pounds to move to 9-1 on the season. He also received bonus points in four out of five matches which led his team to a 4-1 record on the weekend.
The WVU Tech wrestlers will return to action Friday, Dec. 6 in the Baisi Athletic Center, their first home meet of the season. The Golden Bears will face off against Tennessee Temple University.
