Tech men post 95-84 win

MONTGOMERY — The WVU Tech men’s basketball team powered past former Mid-South Conference foe Campbellsville University 95-84 Saturday at the Neal D. Baisi Center.

During the game, both coaching staffs took part in the “Coaches vs. Cancer” national weekend, during which personnel wore sneakers with their suits to raise awareness for the cause. All admission proceeds from the game went to the national fundraiser.

On the court, the Golden Bears displayed discipline against the favored Tigers (12-8). The offensive contributors paced the game’s tempo, shooting 14 for 28 from the field and a perfect 6 for 6 from the charity stripe during the first half. At intermission, Tech owned a 41-30 lead with two players in double digits.

Four 3-point goals by Kornilous Donnell at the outset of the second half propelled the hosts to a 53-33 lead with 16 minutes remaining in the contest. Donnell buried six straight treys before missing his final attempt on the evening, going 86 percent from behind the arc overall.

The highlight of the evening came in the squad’s 30 for 33 performance at the free-throw line. “We knew we were a good free-throw shooting team going 72% for the season, but to go 30 for 33, that’s just amazing,” said coach Bob Williams. “Our guys played great tonight.

“I thought they were focused and ready to play. They knew it was a big game. We knew we had to play strong, and that it was going to be a physical game.”

The Golden Bears improved to 13-9 on the season.

Senior guard David Rawlinson led Tech with 28 points, finishing just two assists shy of a double-double for the evening.  Donnell scored 20 points and also finished just one rebound shy of a double-double. Sophomore Jaren Marino recorded another double-double, scoring 20 points while bringing down 11 rebounds. Terrale Clark was the fourth Golden Bear in double figures, adding 19 points to the effort.
