VHS drops Big Atlantic opener

— Class A No. 13 Tygarts Valley held on — literally — for a 59-57 victory over No. 9 Valley Monday night in the nightcap of the first day of the Big Atlantic Classic.

After leading by as many as 10 in the closing minutes of the game, the Bulldogs (9-3) saw their lead cut to four, 54-50, when Raeshawn Breckenridge converted on a steal and an assist from Henry Barron to bring the Greyhound fans to their feet.

Tygarts Valley, which was considered one of the top teams in Class A after starting the season 6-0, went to the stall, and it ran nearly two minutes off the clock before Valley (8-3) allowed Brandon Pritt to get inside the defense for an easy layup that put his team ahead 56-50.

The Greyhounds were forced to foul, and, despite some shaky free-throw shooting down the stretch, the Bulldogs were able to maintain the lead. A Valley jumper just before the buzzer sounded made no difference, and Tygarts Valley advanced to play the winner of Tuesday’s Greenbrier West-Moorefield matchup in the Class A title game at 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Pritt came off the bench to lead the way for Tygarts Valley, scoring 21 points and grabbing three rebounds.

Valley, which led by as many as six points in the opening half, was led by Zac Warden, who scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
