Locals prep for region wrestling

Events slated at Ripley, Coal City

— Local high school wrestling squads will join their counterparts from around the state this weekend in region qualifying tournaments.

Oak Hill will compete with Woodrow Wilson, Greenbrier East, Shady Spring and others in a Class AAA qualifier at Ripley High School, while Fayetteville and Midland Trail will participate in the Class AA-A Region 3 tournament Friday and Saturday at Independence High School. Among the favorites in the AA-A event will be state No. 2 Greenbrier West and No. 4 Independence, as ranked by

Oak Hill posted decisions over Wyoming East (57-9) and Richwood (57-12) last week, while losing to Winfield (52-21).

Local grapplers ranked in the state’s Top 10 of their classifications by as of Feb. 6 include:

-- Marc Williams, Oak Hill, fifth, 132;

-- Bailey Bowles, Fayetteville, 10th, 113;

-- Cameron Underwood, Fayetteville, seventh, 138;

-- Tanner Bolt, Fayetteville, eighth, 182;

-- Ethan Barker, Midland Trail, ninth, 182; and

-- River Pullens, Fayetteville, eighth, 195.

The state tournament is set for Feb. 21-23 at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena in Huntington.

Admission is $8 for adults and $7 for students.
