Fayetteville tops Valley

Valley Middle School, on the heels of two straight unbeaten seasons, suffered a season-opening, 26-16 football setback to Fayetteville last Thursday.

“It was a great game, really entertaining,” said Fayetteville coach John Mark Kincaid.

The Pirates, who led 20-16 at halftime, were powered by the running of Dalton Dempsey. Dempsey rushed for about 175 yards and scored on runs covering 65, 10, 35 and 20 yards. He also caught three passes for 77 yards, all from quarterback Will Fenton.

Fenton was 4-of-6 for 80 yards. Marcus Lively caught the other pass.

Lively had the two-point conversion and rushed for 50 yards.

Kincaid praised the offensive line play of Triston Treadway, Micah Bates, Christian Lively, Braden Broach and Jacob Cox.

Dalton Dempsey and Fenton each had a fumble recovery, and Lively intercepted a pass. Defensive leaders were C.J. Dooley, Trent Pullens, David Gilliam, Jordan Dempsey and Alex Hewitt.

The Greyhounds lost their quarterback to injury in the first quarter, coach Darren Jones said.

“We are still learning a new system, plus we lost some key players from last year in key positions,” Jones said. “There are some positives, though.”

Tracy Conliffe rushed for 163 yards and Laytner Smith added 66 yards for the VMS offense.

“(Having) young receivers makes it tough throwing the ball,” Jones added. “We will be tuned in as the season progresses.”

Fayetteville puts its 1-0 record on the line at 6 p.m. tonight at home against Ansted. Valley hosts Madison tonight. In other middle school games, Meadow Bridge visits Peterstown.
