Valley 2

A couple of season-long problems finally did Valley in for good during Monday’s Class A Region 3, Section 3 championship baseball game.

Aaron Lowe held the Valley bats in check, pitching a no-hitter and lifting Sherman past the Greyhounds to win the section crown 4-2.

The result marked the Tide’s first section title since 1997, while it prevented Valley from continuing its quest for a fourth straight state tournament appearance.

“It’s the same story as all year,” said Valley coach Joe Craffey. “We had 11 or 12 (baserunners) left on; no hits in crucial situations. At some point, you’ve got to put the ball in play.”

“And, Rae (Raeshawn Breckenridge) pitched a good game; we just can’t play defense behind our pitchers,” he added. “I knew at some point it would come back to bite us.”

“Every one of the boys played with heart,” said Sherman coach Jeremiah Pettry, whose father, Aaron, coached the Tide the last time they won the section. “They didn’t want to go home yet.”

Bailey Kirk collected two hits and John Hunter had a double to lead the Tide.

Valley finished the season 18-11.

Sherman travels to battle the Man Hillbillies in the region semifinals Monday.
