State berth on line as FHS, Tide tangle

FAYETTEVILLE — The Fayetteville Pirates are looking to return to the state softball tournament after missing out in 2013.

To do that, the Pirates must first dispose of visiting Sherman at 6 p.m. tonight in the Class A Region 3 final. Tonight’s winner will earn a berth in the upcoming state tourney.

Fayetteville dropped an 8-0 decision to Sherman in the first game of the 2014 regular season.

“They’re a solid team,” second-year FHS coach Ashley Poland said of Sherman. “They’re a good hitting team.

“We’re going to have to play solid all around.”

Fayetteville, which was bounced out in the Region 3 final by Man last spring, anticipates tonight’s challenge.

“They’re ready,” Poland said Wednesday of her players. “I think they hate that they have to wait until Thursday.”

The Pirates whipped Greenbrier West 17-3 to advance to the championship game.

Sherman advanced by beating Valley in the section championship and getting by Man 6-4 in the region semifinal.
