Brown to play for UC-Beckley

Jessica Brown is looking forward to being back in the mix.

Brown, the former Fayetteville High School sports standout who attended Marshall University in her freshman year, plans to resume her athletic career in the coming school term by competing in volleyball and basketball at the University of Charleston-Beckley.

“It’s real exciting,” Brown said of the opportunity to compete again. “To go from playing basketball, volleyball and softball (in high school), to go to doing nothing ...

“It’s exciting (to play again), although it might be hard to get into shape.”

Brown used well some of her newly-found free time in Huntington this past year, earning dean’s list status in her pharmacy studies. And, although not competing, she remained active. “I went to the gym almost every day to play around,” she said.

She missed the on-court battles, though, and said she considered approaching the Marshall women’s basketball coaches to explore the possibility of trying out for the Thundering Herd squad. Instead, she opted to return to southern West Virginia.

“I decided to come home,” Brown said. “I’m really excited to play with some of the girls I used to compete with.

“And I get to reunite with Hannah (Samples).”

Samples, a former Fayetteville High teammate of Brown’s, is going to play volleyball for UC-Beckley.

Brown scored 1,460 points during her basketball career at FHS and was a Class A first-team all-state pick following the 2012-13 season. She also helped lead the Pirates to the state volleyball tournament.

She realizes that, with studies and playing two sports for UC-Beckley’s junior varsity program, her days will be full. On top of that, Brown says she’s already taking summer classes and has her sights set on graduating ‘a little early’ with a nursing degree.

“The cool thing about UC-Beckley is they don’t have a full college schedule,” she said. “It will be easier with half a season.

“And they’re willing to work with me (in terms of class schedule).”
