Midland nips Fayetteville; Oak Hill upsets Westside

In recent high school basketball games:

Midland Trail 61

Fayetteville 60

Collin Carte’s 3-pointer with 5 seconds left completed Midland Trail’s rally from a big deficit against Fayetteville Friday in Hico.

It marked the second one-point win of the season for Trail over the rival Pirates.

Midland Trail coach Curtis Miller says his team became “frustrated” when Fayetteville built up a double-digit lead and his players “tried to play one-on-one.”

The situation improved, he said, when “we started running our offense.”

The Midland Trail-Fayetteville rivalry “is always going to be a close game,” Miller added. “A win’s a win; it doesn’t matter if it’s 30 points or one.”

Rickie Carter had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Patriots (5-4). Carte finished with 14 points

Will Fenton led Fayetteville (0-7) with 19 points, including five 3-point goals. Tasheem Saunders had 15 points and Ricky Meadows and Caleb Bailes 11 each.

Midland Trail, the South’s No. 4 seed, will host Tygarts Valley, the North’s No. 5 seed, at 8 p.m. Friday in the opening round of the West Virginia Hometown Invitational Tournament. There will be a junior varsity contest at 6 p.m.

The Patriots have two makeup games scheduled: home against Greenbrier West on Feb. 3 and away versus Greater Beckley Christian on Feb. 17.

Fayetteville will travel to play Clay-Battelle Friday in the WVHIT.
