OAK HILL —
Five first-half 3-point goals put Oak Hill in business against Westside.
At halftime, the rims froze over.
Time for Plan B.
“I said, ‘Guys, they’re not going in from the perimeter,” coach Wes Brown said. “We have to get to the rim. Don’t settle for 3s.’”
The Red Devils did just that, forgoing long-range bombs and converting bad Westside passes into fast-break baskets, en route to a 53-46 upset of the Class AA No. 5 Renegades.
Oak Hill (10-8), which also beat Westside 72-63 on Jan. 17, never trailed after leading 6-2 early on 3-pointers by Jalen Jones and Josh Jones.
Jalen Jones, at a reported 5-foot-7 the smallest man on the court, proved the biggest man, time and again. He paced the Red Devils with 17 points, and came up with nine rebounds along with two steals.
“I thought Jalen had 29 rebounds,” Westside coach Nick Cook said. “He was everywhere tonight.”
Brown said, “Jalen brings it down with authority.”
Jones and forward Marc Logan gave stellar Renegades center Justin Cogar all he wanted, somehow coming up with the ball and launching the Oak Hill fast break.
Westside, not exactly a bad transition team itself, found itself watching the Red Devils take the ball in.
“We had more turnovers tonight than we did last night, and I didn’t think that was possible,” Cook said.
Westside (15-6) was coming off an 83-78 loss Monday to Class AAA No. 3 Woodrow Wilson. The Renegades battled back from a 19-point deficit against the Flying Eagles, only to get outscored 5-0 in the final minute.
After trailing Oak Hill 10-2 early, the Renegades rolled off eight straight points to pull into a tie. That set the tone for the game — Oak Hill would go out by six or eight, and Westside would rally.
But the shots wouldn’t fall for the Renegades, and as their turnovers mounted, the Red Devils made them pay with their transition game.
“You don’t expect that out of Westside,” Brown said. “We got some turnovers in bunches.”
Westside, normally a smooth-shooting 3-point team, made just one all night, by Corey Bowles.
Any final chance Westside had to win fizzled out in the final 1:31. Jalen Jones went to the foul line six times and made just three shots, but the Renegades missed three good looks at the basket, two of the shots falling as air balls.
Cogar led Westside with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Bowles added nine and Levi Lambert scored eight and had seven boards.
“Oak Hill was quicker than us, they were faster and they rebounded better,” Cook said. “They deserved to win tonight.
“I’m very disappointed. If this is the effort by kids are going to have, the postseason is going to be very short-lived for us.”
Josh Jones scored 10 points, while Logan tallied eight, along with eight rebounds. Center Joey Re was held to five points, but contributed six rebounds.
Westside now awaits the sectionals, while Oak Hill plays at Winfield Thursday and has a 6 p.m. home game Friday with Elkins.
