Senior forward Tyler Skaggs and junior defender Jose Hunter are among six Midland Trail boys soccer players receiving postseason recognition.
Skaggs was named second-team all-state by the West Virginia High School Soccer Coaches Association and will be playing in the North-South All-Star contest on Nov. 25 in Fairmont.
Hunter received honorable mention all-state from the coaches association, while he and Skaggs were named to the all-Coalfield Conference first team.
Joining the pair in receiving Coalfield recognition were second-team selections Brandon Belcher and Danny Hunter and honorable mention picks Dallas Lesher and Nikolas Brewer. Belcher and Hunter are senior midfielders, Lesher is a senior forward, and Brewer is a sophomore goalkeeper.
“These players worked extremely hard this season and I am pleased that opposing coaches have recognized them for their accomplishments,” said Midland Trail coach Dave Pollard. “We have achieved considerable success as a team in our first two years as a high school program and this is directly related to the dedication of this core group of players.”
In its inaugural season in 2011, Trail rang up a 7-9-4 record and followed that in 2012 with an 8-11-2 mark. “This is unprecedented for second-year teams to win this number of games. There is no better teacher than experience in playing at the high school level and when you think about, our seniors are second-year players while nearly all of our opponents were playing with fourth-year seniors,” Pollard said.
“We not only had a solid record, but there were just two games all year where we didn’t compete well and have an opportunity to win. We will lose some excellent players to graduation but they have set the tone and enabled our younger players to learn how to win. I think that you will see many more Trail players receiving postseason accolades in the years to come.”
