The first annual New River Gorge Challenge Weekend was held this past weekend in the towns of Fayetteville and Thurmond. The two day event combined the New River Gorge Challenge on Saturday and the Thurmond Triathlon on Sunday.
Previously known as Captain Thurmond’s Challenge, the New River Gorge Challenge consisted of 28.5 miles of the most extreme whitewater, mountain biking and running in the state. According to Adam Stephens of Marathon Bicycle, “The New River has been recognized for its challenging terrain, outdoor pursuits and natural beauty. We had teams of hard core competitors who have competed in regional and national events and novice racers.”
The Thurmond Triathlon is a beginner-friendly triathlon consisting of 5 miles of easy biking, paddling and running. According to Chad McCune, Thurmond Town Council member, “We wanted families to join us in the historic Town of Thurmond for a day of fun, friendly competition and appreciation for the Gorge and its recreational opportunities. One competitor competed in both events. On Sunday he played the role of Dad in Thurmond, joining his wife and two children for a day of togetherness in the outdoors.”
The New River Gorge Challenge Weekend was made possible through major sponsors Hometown Subaru, Red Bull, ACE Adventure Resort, Adventures On the Gorge, the National Guard and Copen Machinery. Next year’s race is scheduled for the first weekend in August.
