Sports Briefs


— Oak Hill High School fall sports practices will begin Monday, Aug. 5 at the following times:

-- Football, 7 a.m.;

-- Girls soccer, 7 a.m.;

-- Boys soccer, 7 a.m.; and

-- Cross country, 10 a.m.

Volleyball practice will begin on Monday, Aug. 12.

Students must have a current physical, proof of insurance, and their most current report card.

The 11th annual Johnnie Ferri Softball Tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 3 and 4 at Collins Park in Oak Hill.

Proceeds from the co-ed tournament benefit the Johnnie Ferri Memorial Scholarship which is awarded to a senior at Oak Hill High School.

Sign-ups are still being accepted for a Concord University baseball showcase camp planned for Aug. 14.

In addition to the Mountain Lions’ coaching staff, representatives from other NCAA Division I, II, III, NJCAA and NAIA coaches will also be in attendance.

The camp will be conducted on the Concord campus at Anderson Field and run from 1 to 5 p.m. at a cost of $75 per player. To register, visit http://collegebaseballcamps.com/culions.

The camp is designed for players at least 14 years old up to those competing on the junior college level. Attendees will take part in a pro-style workout that includes live batting practice along with advanced skill instruction for all positions,  including pitching. Players will have the opportunity to be evaluated by the Concord University baseball staff as well as other schools.

Participants must bring their own baseball equipment including a glove, bat, running shoes or turf shoes, hat and any other equipment they feel necessary to compete.

This summer, free golf lessons are being offered at Hawks Nest Golf Course near Gauley Bridge.

Children ages 7 to 12 are taught on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m.

Children ages 13 to 17 are taught on Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m.

Golf equipment and balls will be provided at no cost.

Lessons are being taught by Chuck Goosman.

Coaches at the college, high school, junior varsity, junior high and recreational league (adult or youth) levels are urged to submit game results and updated statistics to The Fayette Tribune and The Montgomery Herald.

When turning in scores or statistics, coaches/statisticians are reminded to provide at least last names of participants; information will not be accepted with only the first name.

When they’re available, fall rosters and schedules can be submitted.
