The Baisi Classic, which was initiated in 2005, honors the memory of a Tech legend. Neal D. Baisi, who passed away on March 7, 2005, coached the Golden Bear men’s basketball team to a 319-76 record in 12 seasons, which included four West Virginia Conference regular season championships and two WVC tournament titles.
“Papa Bear” Baisi, who later was the school’s athletic director, was a nationally-known innovator, as his teams led the nation in scoring six times. And, he was credited with pioneering the concept of the pressing defense.
