Annual Baisi Classic slated this Saturday

MONTGOMERY — The WVU Tech men’s and women’s basketball programs will host the 2013 Baisi Classic this Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Neal D. Baisi Center.

Fans will enjoy a tripleheader of basketball action. In the first game, the Tech women will entertain Notre Dame (Ohio) College at 2 p.m. The men’s squad will follow the women’s game with a contest against Ohio Mid-Western College at 4 p.m.

At the conclusion of the Golden Bears’ games, the athletic department will host the annual alumni game featuring past Golden Bears.

Tickets to the tripleheader will be available on the day of the event at the Baisi Center. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for seniors and children. Faculty, staff and students are free with a valid ID.

The Baisi Classic, which was initiated in 2005, honors the memory of a Tech legend. Neal D. Baisi, who passed away on March 7, 2005,  coached the Golden Bear men’s basketball team to a 319-76 record in 12 seasons, which included four West Virginia Conference regular season championships and two WVC tournament titles.

“Papa Bear” Baisi, who later was the school’s athletic director, was a nationally-known innovator, as his teams led the nation in scoring six times. And, he was credited with pioneering the concept of the pressing defense.
