Meadow Bridge senior guard Chandra Harrah has been pleasantly surprised by her team’s play so far this basketball season.
The Wildcats are currently 4-0, with a big game set against nearby rival Greenbrier West at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Meadow Bridge.
“I think we’re doing better than what I expected,” she said recently. “This year, everyone’s improved a lot.
“We play together a lot more. I like that a lot better.”
She’s anticipating the matchup with the Cavaliers. Harrah last played in junior high against players currently on the West roster. “I’m looking forward to it. I think everybody is.”
Harrah surpassed the 1,000-point career scoring barrier for the Wildcats late last season, and she currently has 1,119 career points.
“It was something I’ve been talking about since I was in biddy ball,” she said. “I remember talking to Coach (Steve) Taylor about it.
“I’m honored (to be in the school’s 1,000-point club). It wasn’t easy. It took a lot of work.”
Harrah has set her sights on the school’s all-time career mark (boys or girls) of 1,490 points, established by Sharon Campbell.
She feels she’s improved since her time as a freshman starter for the Wildcats, the last time the squad advanced to the state tournament. “When I was a freshman, I was always nervous,” Harrah said. “Now I’m handling things a lot better, and my shooting and ball-handling have improved a lot.”
It’s been a productive senior year so far for Harrah, who terms herself a “pretty good” student. She was the school’s homecoming queen this fall, and she’s remained active in Vo-Tech programs, particularly when it comes to pharmacy.
“It’s been a really good year,” she said.
Aside from possibly placing her name atop of the school career scoring list, one other thing would make her senior campaign go much better.
“I think we have the capability to get back down (to Charleston),” Harrah said. “Allison Gilkerson and Sarah Fleshman, the other two seniors, have stepped up. We worked out throughout the summer.
“We’ve played together since fifth grade. I hope we can get back down there one last time.”
