WVU Tech to host postseason tourneys

MONTGOMERY — WVU Tech will host the 2013 Association of Independent Institutions (AII) men’s and women’s basketball tournament March 1-3, 2013.

“We are very pleased to be hosting the A.I.I. men’s and women’s basketball tournaments,” WVU Tech Athletics Director Frank Pergolizzi said in a press release. “This gives both of our teams an excellent chance to compete on their home court.

“In addition, we will be bringing nine collegiate basketball teams and their fans to the greater Montgomery area for the weekend. I know that all of our alumni and friends will join us in making this a very successful event.”

Joining WVU Tech in the men’s tournament will be Allen University, California State University San Marcos, Morris College, Robert Morris University-Springfield and Voorhees College.

In the men’s event, the top two seeds receive a first-round bye. Seeds 3 and 6 and Seeds 4 and 5 play first-round contests on Friday, March 1. The winners will face the top two seeds in the semifinals on Saturday, March 2. The championship game will be played on Sunday, March 3.

The tournament champion will receive a direct qualification berth to the NAIA national tournament.  

“The A.I.I. Tournament is a great opportunity for our school to be able to showcase the top NAIA independent basketball programs in the country,” said men’s head coach Bob Williams. “To have a postseason tournament in the Baisi Center is a great advantage for our team."

The women will participate in a five-team tournament. Seeds 4 and 5 will play a first-round game on Friday, March 1, with the semifinals set for the following day and the championship on Sunday, March 2.

Direct entry into the NAIA tournament will occur only if the winner is ranked in the NAIA Top 25.

The women’s field will include Allen University, Morris College, Robert Morris University-Springfield, Voorhees College and host WVU Tech.

“I am thrilled at the opportunity WVU Tech has to host the women’s tournament,” said head coach Jenna Lehman-Everhart.

“Bringing such quality competition to Montgomery will allow us to showcase our program to the community as well as provide a wonderful atmosphere for postseason play.”

“I’m thrilled that West Virginia Tech will serve as the host institution for [this year’s] A.I.I. Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournaments,” said A.I.I. Commissioner Ted Breidenthal.

“College basketball fans from the Montgomery area will get to see one of the most competitive conference tournaments in the nation. I also am confident the student-athletes at our member schools will enjoy the atmosphere and the local hospitality.”
