The Collins Middle School varsity and junior varsity soccer teams completed outstanding seasons Monday with tie contests at Park Middle.
The varsity earned a 2-2 tie with Park.
Blake Wingrove and Andrew Hardman (PK) provided the goals.
Mackenzie Miller had an assist, and Jacob Logan had a save.
“It was a very intense game with two Collins players (Jared Richards and Kevin Stanley) getting yellow cards in the second half,” said Collins coach Jeff Jones. “The game was very physical and you could tell the players on both teams wanted to win the game badly.“
Collins fell behind 1-0 early, then Wingrove netted a goal late in the first half to tie it at 1-1.
Park had one apparent goal called back for offsides. The hosts then went ahead 2-1 with about 12 minutes to go in the game.
“We just kept getting the ball in the penalty area without any luck and finally Andrew got hip checked in the box and was awarded a penalty kick with about a minute left in the game,” said Jones. “As soon as they made the call, I knew Andrew was going to put the ball in the back of the net. Which of course, he did. And in doing so, he tied his brother, Jon Hardman, and Ian Hunt for most goals in a season at Collins with 19 goals.”
The Little Devils finish the season with a 9-0-3 record.
The junior varsity squad played to a 1-1 tie with Park.
Tanner Harris provided the lone Collins goal on an assist from Dylan Massey.
Mason Richardson had two saves, including one in the waning minutes to preserve the stalemate.
The jayvee unit closed out the year at 9-0-1.
“I am very proud of those kids and all that they have accomplished this year,“ Jones said of his program. “We lose 10 players to high school next year, all of whom I think will contribute on both the boys and girls teams.
“But, we also have 15 players coming back, with several others coming up into Collins that will be well-prepared and ready to fill the holes left by the future high schoolers.”
On Oct. 17, the Little Devils posted a 3-0 win over Bluefield.
Goals were provided by Jared Richards, Blake Wingrove and Miranda Jones (PK).
Lilly Hines and Nick Forren had assists, and Jacob Logan had a save.
The JV won 2-0 in one half of action.
Dylan Massey registered the goal for Collins.
Julia Ivey had one assist, and Mason Richardson had a pair of saves.
