Flying Eagles roll past Oak Hill by 75-41 count

OAK HILL — Corey Acord, Dai Dai Fortune, Noah Hancock and the Woodrow Wilson junior varsity team battled for a thrilling 65-62 overtime victory over Oak Hill Friday night at The Lilly Center in Oak Hill, and three quarters later they were back on the court, trying their hand against the Red Devil varsity.

In between, the Class AAA No. 2 Flying Eagle varsity club put on a show, cruising to their 14th straight victory with a 75-41 victory over Oak Hill in the regular season finale.

“We got what we needed to get done,” said Woodrow Wilson head coach Ron Kidd. “We were happy that nobody got hurt, and that was the main thing for both teams. That’s what you worry about in your last game.

“Those kids who were in at the end go just as hard as the other guys (in practice). They deserved the minutes, and I thought they did well.”

Beckley (18-4) — which will enter this week’s Region 3, Section 2 tournament as the No. 1 seed — put the game away early, going on a 12-0 run in the opening quarter to turn a 5-5 tie into a 17-5 Woodrow lead. Oak Hill couldn’t solve the Flying Eagles’ relentless pressure defenses, and Beckley converted seemingly every Oak Hill mistake into points on the other end.

State player of the year candidate Donté Nabors scored 11 points in the opening frame and Woodrow led 21-10 after eight minutes.

“That’s just normal for him,” said Kidd of another impressive performance from the Beckley sharp-shooter. “But what I like about our team is that they know when he’s hot and get him the ball. It’s a total team effort. It’s not just him doing it by himself.”

If it wasn’t over then, it definitely was when the Flying Eagles outscored the Red Devils 14-0 over the first three minutes of the second quarter. Beckley led 35-10 at that point, and at halftime, they were up 44-18.

Nabors, who scored nine more in the second quarter, had 20 points at halftime, two more than the entire Oak Hill team.

The junior guard played the first five minutes of the second half before taking a seat and watching the rest from the bench. He finished with 22 points.

“We’re playing team basketball,” Nabors said of the team’s recent run of success. “It’s a lot of fun. We get everybody the ball, and we’re playing like we should be playing.”

Chase Hancock got into double figures with a 15-point effort, while Brent Osborne scored nine and Fortune eight.

Oak Hill (3-17), which continued to battle despite the score, was led by Joey Re’s nine points, while Marc Logan and Josh Jones tallied seven each.

The Red Devils will be the No. 5 seed in Region 3, Section 2 and will play at Shady Spring Monday at 7 p.m.
