OAK HILL —
On Thursday, Oct. 4, during halftime of the varsity girls soccer game pitting Shady Spring and Oak Hill on the Red Devils’ home field, a special ceremony will commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The public is invited to join the teams at 4:40 p.m. when launch 100 pink balloons will be launched in honor and in memory of beloved sisters, daughters, nieces, aunts, grandmothers, mothers and friends.
Balloons symbolize uplifting stories: Stories about families shaving their heads to match mom’s chemo-bald scalp. Stories about kids in sports wearing pink wristbands, shoelaces, socks, T-shirts or using pink equipment. Stories about pink hair, pink feathers, pink nails, and pink you don’t see. In every shade from pastel to fushia, children support the breast cancer cause loudly and proudly because a diagnosis of breast cancer is not one woman’s fight, it’s a fight for her whole family.
Community members are urged to write a tribute note to attach to a balloon. Leave notes at the Oak Hill concession stand by 4 p.m. on Oct. 4, or hand it to your school’s soccer coaches.
You may also e-mail notes to terristribute@yahoo.com. (And, please include notes about any teams’ commemorative activities or acknowledgements.)
Participation is not limited to the team members. Donations are accepted but not required. All donations will benefit Terri’s Tribute, a scholarship fund for children who’ve lost their mom to breast cancer.
