Tech softball falls in season opener

The WVU Tech softball team dropped its season opener to Columbia College in doubleheader action over the weekend.

The Fighting Koalas shut out the Golden Bears in the first game 6-0 while Tech clawed back into the second game before dropping a narrow 4-3 verdict.

In the first game, head coach Karin Gadberry started freshman right-hander Bridgett Goss. who pitched four innings and allowed three earned runs on seven hits. Fellow freshman Taylor Norman came on in relief in the fifth inning to give up three earned runs on two hits.

Columbia’s Erin Walker recorded the win, surrendering no runs on five hits.

Tech nearly evened the score with Columbia in the second game of the series. This time, Gadberry sent veteran left-hander Jacki Wood to the mound.  The Golden Bears took an early 1-0 led in the first inning only to have the Fighting Koalas plate three runs in the bottom of the third.

The Bears tied the ball game in the top of the sixth before Wood surrendered the game-winning run in the bottom of the inning. Wood allowed four earned runs on three hits while striking out four Fighting Koala batters in dropping to 0-1 on the season, while Columbia’s Brittany Barr picked up the win.

Seniors Katie Campbell and Ali Holmes led the way for Tech on offense with three hits in six at-bats. Both recorded an RBI in the series.

“It was great to finally get out and play on a field,” said Gadberry. “Although the score may not reflect our performance, we had some really bright spots during the doubleheader.

“We were able to gain some valuable experience.”
