King’s Warriors drop season finale

The Southern West Virginia King’s Warriors dropped their final game of the 2013 regular season 4-2 to the Northern Virginia Royals Saturday night in Fairfax, Va. Southern West Virginia held a 1-0 halftime lead and was hopeful of snagging its first road win of the season.

But the Royals scored four unanswered goals in the second half to take the victory and sweep the season series 3-0-0.

SWV ended the year with a six-game losing streak and finished its second season in the United Soccer League’s Premier Development League’s South Atlantic Division at 4-10-0.

Franck Tayou scored a hat trick for Northern Virginia and Will Stamatis provided the final tally for the Royals. Ricky Angelicola and Harry Sherwood scored the Southern West Virginia goals, and King’s Warriors goalkeeper Erik Mozzo made his second consecutive start and took the loss, making five saves.

“We left it all on the field tonight, as a cohesive unit we did our jobs,” said Mozzo. “We fought hard and scored the first and the last goal. The final result was out of our hands.

“Not only did we finish the season as a team, most importantly, we grew as men and finished together as a band of brothers.”

Tayou completed his hat trick in the 78th minute on a beautiful back-post shot and the Royals held a 3-1 advantage. Stamatis’ goal in the 88th minute off a Tayou assist upped the Northern Virginia lead to 4-1.

The King’s Warriors didn’t quit as Mike Rose set up Sherwood’s header into the Northern Virginia net in the 90th minute, which ended the game’s scoring.
