AAU squad advances to national tournament

— A Fayetteville-based basketball squad earned the silver medal in this past weekend’s State AAU Girls 8th Grade Championships held at Sissonville High School.

The runner-up finish will allow the WV Hornets — coached by Phil Samples and Brent Conley — to advance to the AAU National Division 1 Tournament in Orlando, Fla. July 8-13.

In addition to Fayetteville Middle, schools represented are Shady Spring Middle, Collins Middle and Summers County Middle.

Below is a rundown of the Hornets’ five tournament games:

Southern WV Xpress 61

WV Hornets 54

In the title game, the Xpress outscored the Hornets 9-2 in overtime to capture the state championship.

The Xpress overcame a 10-point deficit they faced at the outset of the fourth period.

For the Hornets, Whitney Justice poured in a team-high 27 points. Morgan Miller was also in double figures with 12. Other scorers were: Abigail Gwinn, 6; Britney Justice, 6; and Kendall Malay, 3.

Both Justices made the all-tournament team.

The Hornets broke open a tight contest with a 17-4 advantage in the fourth quarter over their Martinsburg-based opponent.

Whitney Justice scorched the nets for 35 points to lead the way. Britney Justice contributed 12 points and Kendall Malay 11. Faith Norris added three and Morgan Miller had two.

The Hornets earned the No. 1 seed for Sunday’s bracket play by getting by the Xpress.

A 25-9 fourth-quarter effort was key for the winners.

Whitney Justice tallied 22 points, Britney Justice had 13 and Abigail Gwinn scored 10 to pave the way. Kendall Malay chipped in eight and Morgan Miller four.

The Charleston-based Rising Stars built up a seven-point halftime lead and held on for the victory.

Whitney Justice had 17 for the Hornets, followed by Britney Justice’s 13. Other scorers were: Abigail Gwinn, 9; Morgan Miller, 8; and Kendall Malay, 2.

The Hornets initiated their tournament run with the nine-point win.

Britney Justice popped in 25 points to highlight the scoring attack. Whitney Justice tossed in 21 and Abigail Gwinn 11. Also providing offense were: Faith Norris, 8; Kendall Malay, 4; and Morgan Miller, 2.
