Regional track and field meets set

From Staff Reports

— Track and field athletes statewide will compete in region qualifying meets this week with a goal of advancing to next weekend’s state meet.

Locally, Oak Hill was among the teams slated to compete in the Class AAA Region 3 event Wednesday at UC Stadium’s Laidley Field in Charleston. Fayetteville, Meadow Bridge, Midland Trail and Valley will participate in the Class A Region 3 event on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Laidley.

Fayetteville’s Jonathan Gore (with third-best long jump effort (21-10) according to www.runwv.com, and fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200 and 100-meter dashes) is expected to be one of the top Fayette County Class A competitors.

Midland Trail sprinter Ethan Barker, who has been among the state’s best performers in the 100 and 200, will pace the Patriots. Trail’s boys 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams had recorded some of the state’s top times as of the end of April.

Valley’s Abby Buchan, ranked in the 100, 200 and high jump, will lead her team.

Class AA squads will compete statewide Friday.

The state meet will be staged on Friday and Saturday, May 17-18 in Charleston.
