Old rivalry to be renewed

OAK HILL — Oak Hill and Fayetteville no longer compete against each other on the football field.

But thanks to a unique challenge, the Red Devil and Pirate football teams will go head-to-head once again for a big trophy.

This time the competition is cause-related, and the score is compiled by pints, not touchdowns.

The Oak Hill Red Devils have challenged the Fayetteville Pirates to bring the most player donors to the annual Terri Massey Memorial Blood Drive on Saturday at the Gospel Tabernacle Church in Oak Hill.

Terri, a graduate of FHS, died in October 2009 after a four-year battle against breast cancer. Her dad’s church, The Gospel Tabernacle, hosts the event, the third largest blood drive in West Virginia. Dana Treadway, the event organizer and Terri’s step-mom, wants the event to claim No. 1 in state blood drives.

“The kids will certainly help with our effort to be No. 1,” said Treadway. “We are thrilled they care enough to do this, and know they’ll bring parents and friends, and spread the word on Twitter. The challenge between the two teams will help bring people, too.”

Only the players of the two teams are eligible to enter the competition for the first Wear Pink/Give Red trophy, which will travel to the winner’s school each year.

To catch the eye of drivers and give people a new breast cancer awareness outlet, there will be a Bash Breast Cancer car bash during the blood drive.

Barry Massey, with help from his children, painted a car chassis pink and decorated it with pink ribbons, sayings, and the words Terri’s Tribute. (That organization was founded in January 2010 to raise money for children who’ve lost a parent to breast cancer, and raise awareness about breast cancer by creating the world’s longest pink ribbon scarf. Now on display at Tamarack, the scarf measures over 4,200 feet.)

To get an appointment for the blood drive, call 304-663-2410 or stop by between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Food and door prizes will be available, as well as a free t-shirt for every donor.

The Bash Breast Cancer Car will be on-site at the blood drive. Cost is $1 for two bashes.
