Trailblazers, Collins post football wins

Ansted and Collins both earned middle school football wins Thursday to end the season on a high note.

The Trailblazers defeated visiting Hannan 22-0, while the host Little Devils turned back Fayetteville 16-6.

Chris Sims supplied two rushing touchdowns for Ansted, and Mason Kump also reached the end zone on a rush, with that score being set up by a Levi Lesher interception.

Trenton Browning added a two-point conversion for Ansted.

“Obviously I’m happy for the kids,” said Ansted coach Scott Preast. “We tied Montcalm the first game and hadn’t won one (in the mean time).”

Preast is anticipating many of the players returning for the 2013 season, as several on the roster were just sixth-graders and only nine will move on to the high school ranks.

Meanwhile, Collins defeated the Pirates to grab its first win of the campaign.

Billy Peerce scored on a 38-yard touchdown run on a quarterback sneak for the first score for Collins, while Trenton Casto crossed the goal line from 10 yards away for the second score.

Evan Dillon had both conversion runs.

“We played a whole lot better,” said veteran coach Bo Morrison, who plans to retire following this season and was honored at Thursday’s game. Morrison said the offense played well, including Peerce — a novice behind center who played the first two series and gave Collins a spark while running the wedge middle play (sneak). The defense stood out, too, he added, led by linebackers Dillon, Casey Wood and Jacob Smith. “We did a great job covering Fayetteville’s extra receiver.”

Casto led the CMS offense with 62 rushing yards and one score. Peerce rushed for 38 yards and Dillon 21. Casto completed an 8-yard pass to Dillon. Other offensive contributors included Ryan Hughes and Connor Gibson.
