This fall, Summer Whipkey will fulfill one of the biggest goals in her young life.
“I’ve wanted to play college soccer since the eighth grade,” Whipkey said.
Last Friday, Whipkey — a Midland Trail High School senior — signed a letter-of-intent to attend WVU Tech in Montgomery and play soccer for the Golden Bear women.
“I’m very excited,” she said. “I really want to start as a freshman and to be able to contribute to the team.”
So far in her career in Hico, Whipkey has scored 25 goals and registered 13 assists, while playing primarily as a defender. In her junior year, she was a second-team all-state selection for the Patriots, and she has been honored by the Coalfield Conference for three years.
“I love playing soccer for Trail,” said Whipkey, an active participant in recreational league soccer for years.
“Summer came in as a freshman in her very first game and scored the winning goal playing defense,” Midland Trail coach Scott Wilson said of his standout outside defender. “That was a sign of things to come. She could have been a tremendous scorer for us, but we always used her more on defense because she helped us so much there.”
“She does a good job with her physical skills, and she runs the defense for us,” he added.
